- Seanad: Matter raised under Standing Order 30 (8 Nov 2012)
Jim Walsh: I endorse the comments of the previous Senator and compliment Senator David Norris on tabling the motion. I also compliment the Minister who has led the campaign with a great degree of energy. It has all-party support. When I read the document, it crossed my mind that it was positively in favour of a "Yes" vote. However, it did not register with me that there might be an issue with this...
- Seanad: Matter raised under Standing Order 30 (8 Nov 2012)
Jim Walsh: The only issue I would have concerns the adoption Bill. Will the Minister consider increasing from three to five years the period for young children who will not be in a position because of their age to give their consent to adoption? It may give people sufficient time to provide for their children. While I accept there are additional protections afforded to children under this referendum,...
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Nov 2012)
Jim Walsh: Like other Senators, I add my voice to welcoming the outcome of the children's rights referendum. The outcome was much closer than I thought it would be and there are a number of reasons for this. We need to interpret the results, including the reasons so many people voted "No" and ensure their concerns and issues are addressed. Somebody mentioned a lack of trust in social workers. What...

- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (14 Nov 2012)

- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (14 Nov 2012)
Jim Walsh: No, it was just for one constituency. The main topic that came up among party members was people not being able to access grants for third level education. In some instances, people identified students who have had to leave college as a consequence. In one case, a mother who has been deserted by a husband is in receipt of ¤214 per week and is struggling to meet the cost of sending a child...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Trade Promotion: Discussion (Resumed) with IBEC and IEA (14 Nov 2012)
Jim Walsh: I thank IBEC and the Irish Exporters Association for their positive presentations on what is the most important and difficult challenge facing our country. The trading and investing in a smart economy strategy was published in early 2010. That publication had a particular emphasis on export-led growth, part of which included foreign direct investment, a topic we have not really covered, but...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Trade Promotion: Discussion (Resumed) with IBEC and IEA (14 Nov 2012)
Jim Walsh: No, I have not. It is particularly acute here. Has the association discussed its specific suggestion with the Department? I think there is much merit in it having an Ireland House arrangement to co-ordinate a cohesive approach for embassies and the other agencies, including IDA Ireland, which operate abroad. That is imperative.
