Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Media, Communications, Culture and Sport: General Scheme of the Broadcasting (Amendment) Bill: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Jul 2025)

Malcolm Byrne: I thank all the witnesses. In particular, I welcome Mr. Dooley back. I am not quite sure about Mother Teresa, but he has certainly appeared before this committee far more often than Our Lady has appeared at Lourdes. I thank him for his contribution. Public service broadcasting will not just be provided by RTÉ. It can be provided by TG4, by Virgin Media and local and independent...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Media, Communications, Culture and Sport: General Scheme of the Broadcasting (Amendment) Bill: Discussion (Resumed) (8 Jul 2025)

Malcolm Byrne: Mr. Dooley knows where I stand in terms of the broader public funding issue. I found there was some criticism earlier of the independent sector and naturally, I will stand up for much of that sector. It is unfair and unacceptable to say there are widespread bad practices within the independent sector. Specifically, regarding the funding issue and the future-funding model, when we...

Malcolm Byrne: I might ask Mr. O'Brien about the change in the sector which we have already talked about. As witnesses will know, I chair the Oireachtas Committee on Artificial Intelligence. AI will have, particularly when the witness talks about residuals, a huge impact. It does not really touch on it within this legislation but it has a significant impact on what we are talking about.
