- Seanad: Post Office Network: Motion (26 Apr 2021)
Lisa Chambers: I disagree with much of what Senator Mullen said. There is nothing meek about this motion. From the perspective of the Fianna Fáil Party, protecting and advocating for our post office network is something we have been doing for many years. That is the reason it is still on the agenda. There is a Government commitment to maintain and modernise the post office network and ensure that...
- Seanad Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Business of Select Committee (26 Apr 2021)
Lisa Chambers: I remind members to turn off their mobile phones and to mute their devices when they are not contributing. I welcome everyone to the meeting. We have no correspondence for today's meeting. Next is the adoption of draft minutes for our meeting of 19 April, which was a meeting with the Institute of International and European Affairs. Is the adoption of the minutes agreed to? Agreed.
- Seanad Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Responses to Brexit in Further and Higher Education: Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (26 Apr 2021)
Lisa Chambers: The agenda for today's meeting includes a discussion with the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Deputy Harris. We are looking at the mutual recognition of education qualifications between the UK and Ireland, third level supports available for Irish students in the UK, students from Northern Ireland availing of third level opportunities in the...
- Seanad Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Responses to Brexit in Further and Higher Education: Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (26 Apr 2021)
Lisa Chambers: I thank the Minister for that comprehensive statement. He covered a lot of ground and it is nice to have a positive meeting about Brexit and talk about opportunities and look to the future. That is the right space for us to be in. A number of members are offering, so if it is all right with the Minister, I will take questions and then go back to him.
- Seanad Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Responses to Brexit in Further and Higher Education: Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (26 Apr 2021)
Lisa Chambers: I have a couple of questions. All members who indicated have contributed at this stage. In terms of the Erasmus programme, to follow on from what the Minister was saying, there seems to be quite a focus on educational mobility and encouraging students to avail of opportunities, be they within Ireland or abroad. I would agree with the Minister that we need to encourage more students to do...
- Seanad Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Responses to Brexit in Further and Higher Education: Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (26 Apr 2021)
Lisa Chambers: I thank the Minister. The SUSI review is really welcome. I was not aware that 40% of students were accessing some level of support. That is quite good, actually, and higher than I thought. Some of the pressure comes on when, having qualified for a full or a partial grant, students are reassessed annually and it can sometimes make it difficult to take up part-time employment because it can...
- Seanad Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Responses to Brexit in Further and Higher Education: Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (26 Apr 2021)
Lisa Chambers: It is a relief to hear that because a significant number of people were advocating to go down that route. I think the Minister is correct that it would become a barrier to people not just from disadvantaged backgrounds but from ordinary backgrounds.
- Seanad Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Responses to Brexit in Further and Higher Education: Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (26 Apr 2021)
Lisa Chambers: It is a lot of debt to take on. We already need to think about people getting into homes, so we do not want to have extra barriers. The Minister is correct: the decision was probably delayed for lots of reasons, but it is about time that, collectively as a Parliament, we made that call.
- Seanad Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Responses to Brexit in Further and Higher Education: Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (26 Apr 2021)
Lisa Chambers: The Minister now has an extra job to take away with him. There is no better man than Senator Ó Donnghaile to come forward with some suggestions on that issue. All members who have sought to contribute have done so. I thank the Minister for his time this afternoon. It has been a most interesting engagement and we have covered many topics. We definitely went beyond the scope of the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement: Engagement with Mr. Barry Andrews, MEP (5 May 2021)
Lisa Chambers: No. I am actually here, Chair.

Lisa Chambers: It does.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (7 May 2021)
Lisa Chambers: I wish to raise today the ongoing restrictions in maternity hospitals. A number of Members have raised this, as have I. I am really not sure who is making the rules or what exactly is going on across the country because it appears to be a postcode lottery. We have varying degrees of restrictions, but it seems to be the general rule of thumb that a partner can now attend the anomaly scan...
- Seanad: European Digital Green Certificate: Statements (7 May 2021)
Lisa Chambers: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Byrne, to the Chamber. It is great to have him here and it is nice to be having a positive discussion connected to the pandemic about reopening and getting back to travelling. This is good not just for the economic benefits for the country, but it is also good for people to get to see family and friends and to be able to move more freely. Freedom of...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 May 2021)
Lisa Chambers: I agree with the Order of Business, as outlined by the Leader of the House. I wish to raise two issues, the first being the maternity restrictions that remain ongoing. I raised in the House last Friday, as did other colleagues, the ongoing restrictions on partners attending for all the scans, for labour in the antenatal ward right up to birth and on visiting hours after the birth has taken...
- Seanad: Future of Banking in Ireland: Statements (10 May 2021)
Lisa Chambers: Banking in Ireland is changing at a rapid rate. The pandemic has accelerated that pace of change. People of all ages, from the personal user to the large commercial customer, are banking online. The banks are responding to this change, understandably, but the impact on customers is already evident. A reduction in face-to-face service and less competition for products like business loans...
- Seanad Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Business of Select Committee (10 May 2021)
Lisa Chambers: I remind members to ensure their mobile phones are switched off and to mute their devices until contributing to the meeting. The first item is correspondence from Mr. William Lavelle, head of the Irish Whiskey Association in Drinks Ireland, also representing the Dairy Council of Ireland and the Northern Ireland Dairy Council. This is in conjunction with correspondence from Senator...
- Seanad Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Customs Checks and Trade Flows in and out of Irish Ports: Discussion (10 May 2021)
Lisa Chambers: The agenda for today's meeting is to delve further into customs checks and trade flows in and out of Irish ports following Brexit. I must now advise members and witnesses with regard to privilege. Witnesses giving evidence from within the parliamentary precincts are protected by absolute privilege in respect of the evidence they give to a committee. This means that witnesses have a full...
- Seanad Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Customs Checks and Trade Flows in and out of Irish Ports: Discussion (10 May 2021)
Lisa Chambers: I thank members and witnesses for bearing with us through that technical glitch. The show is back up and running. I now call Mr. Harrahill to make his opening statement.
- Seanad Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Customs Checks and Trade Flows in and out of Irish Ports: Discussion (10 May 2021)
Lisa Chambers: I thank Mr. Harrahill for his statement. We got there in the end. If it is okay, we will proceed through the other opening statements and come to questions thereafter, as members wish to direct. I call Ms Byrne to make her opening statement.

Lisa Chambers: My apologies. Ms Sheridan may have the floor.
