Beef Sector: Motion (27 Mar 2019)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I am grateful for the opportunity to speak on the motion. It is not just now that the beef sector is on its knees; it has been on its knees for a few years. An animal killed in England two or three years ago was making €150 to €200 more because of a cartel in existence here. The Minister needs to tackle the feedlots. In the past few months, 70% of cattle were wheeled out to...

Select Committee on Rural and Community Development: Estimates for Public Services 2019
Vote 42 - Rural and Community Development (Further Revised)
(3 Apr 2019)

Michael Fitzmaurice: We are not criticising the Department in any way. What Deputy Ó Cuív was probably trying to say is that we are just flagging it to the Department that some county managers may have a vision that may not be compatible with what we, as elected representatives, or the Department may want to do and that it might be worth keeping an eye on it. I compliment the Minister on the local...

Select Committee on Rural and Community Development: Estimates for Public Services 2019
Vote 42 - Rural and Community Development (Further Revised)
(3 Apr 2019)

Michael Fitzmaurice: There is one thing the Minister may have overlooked. To solve the pub question and resolve the issue of transport in rural parts of Ireland, one idea I came up with was having minibuses under the auspices of development groups which exist in every town. Would the Minister be in favour of such a scheme and would his Department be prepared to work on it? The other matter was sewerage schemes.

Select Committee on Rural and Community Development: Estimates for Public Services 2019
Vote 42 - Rural and Community Development (Further Revised)
(3 Apr 2019)

Michael Fitzmaurice: For the benefit of members, the committee needs to understand the Western Development Commission better, find out what funding it has and how we can lift that funding. The best thing we can do is invite it to appear before us. There is no point in asking the Minister of State what it is doing with the funding.

Michael Fitzmaurice: I propose that the relevant departmental officials be invited to appear before the committee to update us on community sewerage schemes.

Select Committee on Rural and Community Development: Business of Select Committee (Resumed) (3 Apr 2019)

Michael Fitzmaurice: We need to be careful because Irish Water does not service some of the towns and villages about which we are speaking. There are group water schemes but no sewerage schemes. I have no problem with representatives of Irish Water being invited, but we need to nail down with Irish Water that there are areas with which the Department will be dealing directly.

Report on Public Private Partnerships for Public Sector Infrastructure Projects - Liquidation of the Carillion Group: Motion (4 Apr 2019)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I speak as someone who comes from a construction background. The report refers to subcontractors. There should be a system whereby when payment is made to the main contractor, there is a list of the subcontractors that are on site. It is a problem, not everywhere but here and there, that those subcontractors are owed money. They can find it difficult to do a final sum with some larger...
