- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Brexit: Discussion with Mushroom Industry (27 Sep 2016)
Thomas Pringle: Does the €2.5 million to which Mr. McGovern refers relate to the reduction of 8.5% down to 4.25%?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Brexit: Discussion with Mushroom Industry (27 Sep 2016)
Thomas Pringle: Is the €2.5 million a combined reduction of the higher rate and the lower rate?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Brexit: Discussion with Mushroom Industry (27 Sep 2016)
Thomas Pringle: Is Mr. McGovern only seeking a reduction in the lower rate?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Estimates for Public Services 2016: Vote 30 - Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (27 Sep 2016)
Thomas Pringle: When the GLAS, green, low-carbon, agri-environment scheme, was introduced, there was talk about €250 million and 50,000 farmers with a payment of €5,000 per farmer. The average payment now is approximately €4,300 per farmer. Will the Minister consider opening up the scheme to allow up to 60,000 farmers avail of it? Such a move would not cost anything significantly more...
- Leaders' Questions (28 Sep 2016)
Thomas Pringle: Over the past four years, I have highlighted the effect the Government's social protection cuts have been having on workers in rural areas, but this has always fallen on deaf ears. Maybe I, like many on this side of the House, have been highlighting the problem from the wrong perspective. We have been concerned about the effects cuts have had on workers and their families as their incomes...
- Leaders' Questions (28 Sep 2016)
Thomas Pringle: The Taoiseach has missed the point in his answer, which might be deliberate. The issue is not with the minimum wage or employers' PRSI. The issue is that in many rural areas across the country and not only in Donegal the only work available is seasonal work or part-time work for two or three days a week. As a result of the cuts implemented by Government not only do families not have...
- Leaders' Questions (28 Sep 2016)
Thomas Pringle: I am not laughing.
- Road Traffic Bill 2016 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed) (28 Sep 2016)
Thomas Pringle: The legislation sets out the enactment of the so-called Jake's law on speed limits in housing estates, drug driving and also the mutual recognition of offences across the Border in the Six Counties. I will concentrate mainly on my county of Donegal and some of the very serious issues we have faced in recent years. While a significant hike in the number of road deaths this year is being...
- Water Charges: Motion [Private Members] (28 Sep 2016)
Thomas Pringle: I fully support the motion and I signed it. We could do the country a service and save a lot of money by ending the work of the so-called "expert group" right now if Fianna Fáil Members were to vote the way they say they intend to vote to abolish water charges once and for all. We all know what the expert group is going to say. It will say that water charges should be maintained. It...
- Water Charges: Motion [Private Members] (28 Sep 2016)
Thomas Pringle: I fully support this motion but we need a referendum to be held and the relevant Bill to come through this House to make sure water stays in public ownership because that is the only thing that will ultimately protect the citizens of this country.
- Other Questions: Refugee Resettlement Programme (28 Sep 2016)
Thomas Pringle: 21. To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality if she will explain the low number with regard to the refugee resettlement programme and provide details on the additional steps Ireland is taking to ensure it meets its commitment to take in 4,000 refugees by the end of 2017, given that Ireland has to date only taken in just over 300 refugees; and if she will make a statement on the...
- Other Questions: Refugee Resettlement Programme (28 Sep 2016)
Thomas Pringle: This question relates to the commitment we have made to take in 4,000 refugees by the end of 2017. The nub of the problem is to see where are the problems and delays regarding living up to our international commitments. There certainly seems to be a feeling the Government is not too sorry to see the delays and that there has been a very slow uptake.
- Other Questions: Refugee Resettlement Programme (28 Sep 2016)
Thomas Pringle: I thank the Minister of State for his response and I look forward to reading the full reply. It seems there are problems on the ground in the hotspots, particularly in Italy where the Italians do not want gardaí on their territory. Potentially, there could be police from 27 member states operating in the territory and this might be the cause of some of the problem. What personnel do...
- Other Questions: Refugee Resettlement Programme (28 Sep 2016)
Thomas Pringle: I have a quick question and I will then be happy to give way to my colleague. I presume the figure of 4,000 relates to both relocation and resettlement. If the difficulties continue in Italy, would it be possible to speed up the resettlement number to compensate for the ones that cannot be taken in through relocation?
- Written Answers — Department of Justice and Equality: Official Engagements (28 Sep 2016)
Thomas Pringle: 29. To ask the Minister for Justice and Equality the reason she was sent to the UN Summit for Refugees and Migrants in place of the Taoiseach; the commitments and any new commitment made by Ireland in respect of the refugee crisis; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [27423/16]
- Written Answers — Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources: Climate Change Policy (28 Sep 2016)
Thomas Pringle: 237. To ask the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources if he will respond to the recently published estimates by a member of the Government's Climate Change Advisory Council that failure to meet Ireland's EU 2020 and 2030 climate action targets could result in a shrinking of fiscal space by €3 billion to €6 billion; the way in which his Department will respond...
- Other Questions: Financial Transactions Tax (29 Sep 2016)
Thomas Pringle: 8. To ask the Minister for Finance if he will back the European financial transactions tax, FTT, initiative and support the introduction of the FTT here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [27547/16]
- Other Questions: Financial Transactions Tax (29 Sep 2016)
Thomas Pringle: The question relates to the financial transactions tax being proposed by a number of EU member states through the enhanced co-operation procedure. What are the Government's views on the proposal?
- Other Questions: Financial Transactions Tax (29 Sep 2016)
Thomas Pringle: I thank the Minister for his response, which was virtually identical to a reply to a parliamentary question I asked in June. The only difference I discerned was that the 1% transaction tax in share trading had raised €260 million by the end of August this year. The gist of the Minister's argument appears to be that the regime in place in Ireland is much more onerous than the...
- Other Questions: Financial Transactions Tax (29 Sep 2016)
Thomas Pringle: I have two points. First, with regard to the transactions moving, the proposal is that the financial transactions tax is levied on the portion of a transaction that belongs in the member state where the financial transactions tax is in place. Therefore, in effect, for a company to move in order to benefit, it would have to deal only in transactions that are outside all the member states...
