Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (21 Nov 2018)

Martin Conway: I agree regarding academics and the important role they play. It is hard to get an absolute fix in that regard. I am sure Senator Norris would consider what he said was an oversight and that he would want to withdraw his comments regarding the work of the District Court being demeaning. Its work is extremely important. I am sure the President of the District Court would be very upset if...

Seanad: Irish Nationality and Citizenship (Naturalisation of Minors Born in Ireland) Bill 2018: Second Stage (21 Nov 2018)

Martin Conway: I acknowledge my colleagues in the Labour Party for bringing forward this Bill. We began dealing with the legislation relating to judicial appointments at 2 p.m. However, what the Labour Party is trying to achieve in the Bill before us is far more important. I acknowledge those in the Visitors Gallery, who obviously believe in what is proposed in the Bill. We have been here many times, as...

Martin Conway: However, all our goals are the same in this regard. Being in government is unfortunately not as easy as being in opposition. There may very well be reasons, technical, legal or other why it cannot happen. We all need to strive to achieve the same result.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Nov 2018)

Martin Conway: I welcome the decision by the new Minister for Education and Skills to review the removal of history as a core subject at junior certificate level. The House unanimously passed a Private Members' motion, that I tabled, which called on the Government at that time to examine and reconsider the decision to remove history as a core subject. In 2013 or 2013 I tabled a similar motion in this...

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Nov 2018)

Martin Conway: I am raising a concern brought to my attention in recent days involving Shannon Commercial Properties. It is a semi-State company that manages the Shannon free zone in County Clare. The Shannon free zone has been an extremely important element of the commercial activity of Shannon and the entire mid-west region for many years. A number of companies have been there for a long time. Back in...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Schools Building Projects Status (28 Nov 2018)

Martin Conway: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Jim Daly, to the House. I raise a very important issue relating to education in Ennistymon, County Clare. The debate on a community school for the area has been ongoing since I was in school there in the late 1980s and early 1990s. There are three schools in Ennistymon, namely, the CBS, the vocational school and Scoil Mhuire, all of which do an...

When that is completed, the tendering process and identification of a suitable contractor will take seven to eight months. Is it reasonable to expect that construction will begin on the site in 2019 and the first enrolment of students will be in September 2021?
