Other Questions: Motor Insurance (7 Dec 2016)

Imelda Munster: I seek the Minister's view on the current position on motor insurance. What measures has he taken to address the problem? Has he met the Minister for Finance on the matter? What proposals does his Department have on how to resolve it? Will he make a statement on the matter?

Other Questions: Motor Insurance (7 Dec 2016)

Imelda Munster: The Minister did not quite make it clear whether he had seen or read the joint committee's report on the rising cost of motor insurance. The rising cost of motor insurance is extremely troubling. The Minister said in June that explanations were required and that further investigation was needed. I am glad that he met representatives of Insurance Ireland and the Minister for Justice and...

(7 Dec 2016)

Imelda Munster: In his briefing for 2016 the Minister referred to the local and regional roads network requiring €540 million but the allocation is €334 million, which is significantly short of the amount needed. Given the deterioration of regional and local roads could the Minister not have secured a little more funding? It will require €580 per year to keep them in a steady state.

Select Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Estimates for Public Services 2016
Vote 31 - Transport, Tourism and Sport (Supplementary)
(7 Dec 2016)

Imelda Munster: I am talking about the deficit in respect of the regional and local road funding. It was stated that €580 million per year was needed to keep them in a steady state but in the overall budget the allocation is €334 million. That is far short of what is required.

Vote 31 - Transport, Tourism and Sport (Supplementary)
(7 Dec 2016)

Imelda Munster: With respect, that is still far short of the €280 million to keep them in a steady state condition. It will cost more in the long term.

Vote 31 - Transport, Tourism and Sport (Supplementary)
(7 Dec 2016)

Imelda Munster: In the Minister's briefing he stated that national roads were seriously or grossly underfunded but there was an allocation of an additional €8 million which seems miniscule in comparison to what is needed.

Leaders' Questions (8 Dec 2016)

Imelda Munster: The public transport system is in a perpetual state of crisis. In the past 12 months alone we have seen Luas and Dublin Bus workers go on strike and a very troubling rail review by the National Transport Authority . Bus Éireann is facing catastrophe. On Tuesday the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport told the Government that Bus Éireann was facing insolvency within two...

Leaders' Questions (8 Dec 2016)

Imelda Munster: It is blatantly obvious that by saturating the competitive routes the public transport network will suffer. Particularly on urban routes competitors are coming in and creaming off the most profitable routes and leaving the least profitable ones for the public network. The Minister did not answer my question. I asked him that if the Government was genuinely interested in resolving the...

Questions on Proposed Legislation (8 Dec 2016)

Imelda Munster: Will the Minister in his rental strategy address the issue of landbanks held by local authorities for housing? I know from his reply to a parliamentary question that the Minister does not have any data on it, which is quite worrying. It is a grievous error that in the depths of a housing crisis the Department has not collated the landbanks local authorities have zoned for social housing....

Road Traffic Bill 2016 [Seanad]: Report Stage (13 Dec 2016)

Imelda Munster: Amendment No. 2 proposes to increase the number of drugs included in the Bill. The Bill is restrictive because it only includes heroin, cocaine and cannabis. There are many other drugs and the inclusion of other substances would strengthen the Bill. The Minister said on Committee Stage that he guaranteed the drugs raised in this and Deputy Troy's amendment would be considered for...
