- Payments to Bondholders (17 Nov 2011)
Mick Wallace: I would like to speak about the banking crisis and the latest reports from Europe. The French and the Spanish are paying more for their bonds today than they were yesterday. The sooner we acknowledge that things will not continue as they have been, the better it will be for ourselves. If the reports are true, I commend the Taoiseach for challenging Mrs. Merkel yesterday. If the Germans do...
- Payments to Bondholders (17 Nov 2011)
Mick Wallace: I accept the Government is in a very difficult place.
- Payments to Bondholders (17 Nov 2011)
Mick Wallace: Yes, it is and it is getting even more difficult. I do not accept we have turned any corners. From my experience of the domestic economy, things are getting more rather than less difficult. People have less money in their pockets when they walk through the doors of most retail units in this country. I understand we have become financially very dependent on the ECB and the EU because we...
- Payments to Bondholders (17 Nov 2011)
Mick Wallace: I understand that.
- Exchequer Savings (17 Nov 2011)
Mick Wallace: Question 14: To ask the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform in view of the shortage of Exchequer funds at present the reason that he has not intervened to prevent unnecessary expenditure on the planning stages of projects which are unlikely to be completed during the life of this Government; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [35203/11]
- Exchequer Savings (17 Nov 2011)
Mick Wallace: I understand that certain projects are no longer feasible and that it makes no sense for Government to go ahead with them. One of those projects is the New Ross bypass which it was estimated would cost â¬350 million. It has been pretty obvious for some months that projects like this would not go ahead during the lifetime of this Government. The Minister, Deputy Varadkar, made that quite...
- Exchequer Savings (17 Nov 2011)
Mick Wallace: The Minister, Deputy Varadkar, made the sensible decision of not purchasing the land for the Oilgate project. However, money was spent in the past few weeks on the purchase of land in New Ross at a time when money is scarce. While there have been many good roads built in this country, we got carried away with ourselves and some of it is over the top.
- Exchequer Savings (17 Nov 2011)
Mick Wallace: I believe that a relief bridge in New Ross at a cost of â¬35 million is a more likely outcome in the future than is a â¬350 million bypass.
- Written Answers — Job Creation: Job Creation (17 Nov 2011)
Mick Wallace: Question 31: To ask the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform his views on the fact that, from the outset he has been insisting that facilitating the creation of jobs is one of its top priorities yet the capital spending programme published last week does little to support this claim; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [35202/11]

Mick Wallace: There is probably no one here who will argue in favour of corporate donations, and rightly so. We have learned the damage that can be done. I am actually wary of any donations. I know it is difficult to organise an election campaign and it could probably prevent a person from standing for election if he or she could not get a dig-out somewhere to start up. However, political donations...
- Written Answers — Job Creation: Job Creation (22 Nov 2011)
Mick Wallace: Question 67: To ask the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation the number of jobs that will be created over the next two years as a result of the State's enterprise strategy which will see a total spend of â¬1 billion; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [35990/11]
- Written Answers — Job Creation: Job Creation (22 Nov 2011)
Mick Wallace: Question 83: To ask the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation the number of jobs that will result from the State's enterprise strategy in view of the fact that the Department allocation for 2012 is a record high of â¬514 million, to be followed by â¬458 million in 2013; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [35991/11]
- Written Answers — Departmental Schemes: Departmental Schemes (22 Nov 2011)
Mick Wallace: Question 306: To ask the Minister for Social Protection if she will outline the cutbacks to the community employment scheme, the community services programme, the rural social scheme, local employment service networks; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [30306/11]
- Fishing Industry Development: Statements (23 Nov 2011)
Mick Wallace: I probably know less about fish than Deputy Ross, although I love to eat all kinds of fish. As long as it is dead, I will eat it. I am amazed by the discarding of fish and that there is no better way of dealing with this issue, especially for smaller boats fishing off our coast. Could some accommodation not be found? It is being said the landing of cod will not be allowed and that boats...
- Fishing Industry Development: Statements (23 Nov 2011)
Mick Wallace: Mature fish should be caught. We can deal with the question of catching baby fish by changing equipment.
- Social Welfare Fraud (23 Nov 2011)
Mick Wallace: Question 23: To ask the Minister for Social Protection her views on whether it is realistic that she can save more than â¬600 million tackling welfare fraud in view of the fact that it is impossible to calculate at this stage the volume of fraudulent claims; if the savings don't reach the figure suggested will it prove problematic; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [36281/11]
- Social Welfare Fraud (23 Nov 2011)
Mick Wallace: Question 37: To ask the Minister for Social Protection her views on the notion that she can save more than â¬600 million by tackling welfare fraud is seriously optimistic and will prove problematic down the road if not achieved; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [36280/11]
- Social Welfare Fraud (23 Nov 2011)
Mick Wallace: May I reiterate some of the points made by Deputy Cowen? It is misleading because people were under the impression that there was welfare fraud amounting to â¬600 million. It was disingenuous for some people to suggest that this was the case. There is no doubt that there is welfare fraud but by all accounts it is nothing remotely close to the figure we are talking about. The Minister has...
- Commercial Rates: Motion (Resumed) (23 Nov 2011)
Mick Wallace: I wish to share time with Deputies Clare Daly, Richard Boyd Barrett and Joan Collins. There is no doubt rates have become one of the biggest burdens on small and medium-sized businesses. God knows the domestic economy has enough problems without the unresolved problem of rates hanging over the heads of businesses. I will outline a strong example in this regard. I have an 880 sq. ft. unit...
