Seanad: Companies (Auditing and Accounting) Bill 2003: Committee Stage (Resumed). (28 May 2003)

Mary Henry: The Minister of State could not possibly discuss the various important points raised in this debate overnight or early tomorrow morning. I suggest that the Leader consider holding a debate on Iraq during the time allocated to the Bill tomorrow morning. We have a considerable amount of other business to which we could attend.

Mary Henry: No.

Seanad: Companies (Auditing and Accounting) Bill 2003: Committee Stage (Resumed). (28 May 2003)

Mary Henry: Senator Quinn's points are relevant. This is an important Bill and I cannot see why there should be such a rush. The Minister and his team will only have a few hours tomorrow morning to consider all that has been said today.

Seanad: Adjournment Matters. - Mental Health Services. (28 May 2003)

Mary Henry: I am delighted to see the Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, Deputy Tim O'Malley, here again. We are going over old ground which I have gone over with the Minister of State at the Department of Finance since the last time Deputy O'Malley was here. The Deputy may not remember, but Mary Tudor was described as having had "Calais" on her heart when she died. I am...

Seanad: Adjournment Matters. - Mental Health Services. (28 May 2003)

Mary Henry: I am in despair. The Minister of State said that these "plans will be subject to the approval of the Department of Health and Children and to the necessary capital funding being available." They will not; they will be subject to the Department of Finance. We must start a fund which will be specifically allocated to the hospital because we repeatedly hear from the Minister for Finance that he...

Seanad: Order of Business. (29 May 2003)

Mary Henry: It is good that it seems as if teams from all countries will be able to attend the Special Olympics. Will the Leader ask the Minister for Health and Children to inform the House how he proposes to organise medical coverage of the games in view of the fact that public health doctors are still on strike and the dispute seems nowhere near being settled? It is very serious to think holding a...

Seanad: Order of Business. (10 Jun 2003)

Mary Henry: You, a Chathaoirligh, and other Senators will have received the Irish Council for Science, Technology and Innovation's statement, published by Forfás, on embedding the pharmaceutical and chemical sector in Ireland. This is an important statement because the pharmaceutical and chemical industries are our main exporters. At the same time, however, the Government fixes the prices of...

Seanad: Convention on the Future of Europe: Statements. (10 Jun 2003)

Mary Henry: Senator Bradford, without interruption, please. Senator McDowell will have his turn shortly.

Seanad: Convention on the Future of Europe: Statements. (10 Jun 2003)

Mary Henry: I wish to share my time with Senator Lydon.

Seanad: Convention on the Future of Europe: Statements. (10 Jun 2003)

Mary Henry: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. I want to congratulate all those who have been involved in the negotiations. They have been conducted on behalf not only of Ireland but of Europe. This is a particularly attractive aspect of the way the negotiators have gone about things. I regretted very much the fact that – as I said at the Forum on Europe – all the Irish politicians who...

Seanad: Private Business. - The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (Charters Amendment) Bill 2002: Report Stage and Final Stages. (10 Jun 2003)

Mary Henry: I may be a graduate of another medical school, Trinity College, but on behalf of my colleagues in the Royal College of Surgeons, I thank the Clerk Assistant, the Leas-Chathaoirleach, Senator Paddy Burke, the Leader, who chaired the committee – and all those who sat as members thereof – for the expeditious and kind way they dealt with this important Bill and for ensuring that it went was...

Seanad: Adjournment Matters. - Medical Practitioners (Amendment) Act 2002. (10 Jun 2003)

Mary Henry: I welcome the Minister of State. When the Medical Practitioners (Amendment) Bill 2002 was brought before the Houses of the Oireachtas in April last year, it was stated in the explanatory memorandum that the legislation was being brought forward as a matter of urgency. More than one year later, it has still not been implemented. I agreed at the time that it was needed as a matter of urgency...

Seanad: Adjournment Matters. - Medical Practitioners (Amendment) Act 2002. (10 Jun 2003)

Mary Henry: I thank the Minister of State for that very useful reply.

Seanad: Order of Business. (11 Jun 2003)

Mary Henry: In order that the Deputy Leader is quite sure which non-Government motion we would like the House to support, it is No. 29, which does not use the word "occupying"—

Seanad: Order of Business. (11 Jun 2003)

Mary Henry: —although under the Geneva Convention it is quite in order to refer to the United States and United Kingdom forces as occupying powers.

Seanad: Humanitarian Issues in Post-War Iraq: Statements (Resumed). (11 Jun 2003)

Mary Henry: I second the motion proposed by Senator Norris. I am glad the Minister of State used the word "occupation". It is difficult to make an appeal under the Geneva Convention concerning the responsibilities of occupying powers unless one admits those forces are in a position of occupation, which is what the invading armies are in Iraq.

Seanad: Autism Services: Statements. (11 Jun 2003)

Mary Henry: I thank Senator Ross for sharing his time with me. I also thank him for initiating this debate and for explaining so clearly the practical problems that the parents of the children we are discussing are having. Like Senator Ross, I too am rather disappointed by the statements of the Minister of State, Deputy Tim O'Malley. His statement focused on staffing, which is all very well, but as...

Seanad: Order of Business. (12 Jun 2003)

Mary Henry: The Seanad got the Leader instead.
