Seanad: Electoral (Amendment)(No. 2) Bill 2012: Committee and Remaining Stages (12 Jul 2012)

Jim Walsh: That is out of order.

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment)(No. 2) Bill 2012: Committee and Remaining Stages (12 Jul 2012)

Jim Walsh: I was just making a point.

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment)(No. 2) Bill 2012: Committee and Remaining Stages (12 Jul 2012)

Jim Walsh: On a point of order. I have treated the Minister with a great deal of respect and expect it in return.

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment)(No. 2) Bill 2012: Committee and Remaining Stages (12 Jul 2012)

Jim Walsh: There are some sensitive issues.

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment)(No. 2) Bill 2012: Committee and Remaining Stages (12 Jul 2012)

Jim Walsh: I accept what the Minister has said. Obviously the 66 citizens will be in the majority but in practical terms some may have a good deal of experience at debating by being involved in other organisations but many may not. The random selection will include people who would not normally be involved in public debating, whereas Oireachtas members, whose job it is to articulate and argue and...

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment)(No. 2) Bill 2012: Committee and Remaining Stages (12 Jul 2012)

Jim Walsh: No.

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment)(No. 2) Bill 2012: Committee and Remaining Stages (12 Jul 2012)

Jim Walsh: It is the political parties I fear.

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment)(No. 2) Bill 2012: Committee and Remaining Stages (12 Jul 2012)

Jim Walsh: Yes, but the Government will have an agenda.

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment)(No. 2) Bill 2012: Committee and Remaining Stages (12 Jul 2012)

Jim Walsh: No.

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment)(No. 2) Bill 2012: Committee and Remaining Stages (12 Jul 2012)

Jim Walsh: I agree with the sentiment. To carry that through, why not have 100 citizens and no Oireachtas members on the convention? There is no need for Members if the point which the Minister made, to which I fully subscribe, would lead to a citizenry produced recommendation on all these issues.

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Jul 2012)

Jim Walsh: As I was travelling up on the M9 yesterday, I had an opportunity to listen to the radio. The first thing that came to mind was the beautiful highway which has added significantly to the competitiveness of our economy. It is a tribute to the vision which was invested in road infrastructure, particularly over the last 15, 16 or 17 years. Part of the news bulletin identified the €2.25...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Situation in Palestine and Israel: Discussion with EAPPI (19 Sep 2012)

Jim Walsh: I welcome the members of the delegation. We met previously. I compliment them on the work they are doing. It is not without some personal risk and it is valuable work. I feel a sense of frustration because people have raised the issue of the two state solution. I note from the notes we get from the Government that it is concerned that is now at considerable risk because of the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Situation in Palestine and Israel: Discussion with EAPPI (19 Sep 2012)

Jim Walsh: I agree with the Chairman's proposition. I propose, in addition, that we ask the Tánaiste to consider taking steps to institute a national ban on settlement goods in Ireland. That is a matter on which the Government can decide. It would strengthen the Tánaiste’s hand in Europe if he did so.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Situation in Palestine and Israel: Discussion with EAPPI (19 Sep 2012)

Jim Walsh: Will Mr. O'Brien comment further on whether apostasy is a capital offence?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Situation in Palestine and Israel: Discussion with EAPPI (19 Sep 2012)

Jim Walsh: Would it be possible to check the position in that regard?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Humanitarian Crisis in South Kordofan and South Sudan: Discussion (26 Sep 2012)

Jim Walsh: I will be brief because many of the comments I would make have been made. I pay tribute to the delegates for their presentations and, more significantly, to their colleagues who are working in the field at great personal risk. I think Mr. McQuillan said it was akin to Biafra which was a highly dangerous situation. I am concerned by the indiscriminate nature of what is happening, in...

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2012)

Jim Walsh: I also support the call for a debate on job creation. I welcome the Leader's response in that regard. Job creation, the correction of our fiscal deficit and a resolution to bank debt are of paramount importance in laying the foundation for the recovery of the economy. My question to the Leader concerns a different matter. I was reliably informed in July that the report of what the Minister...

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2012)

Jim Walsh: I could name them but I will refrain from doing so.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2012)

Jim Walsh: I put it directly to the Minister that when the group was being set up, highly questionable changes were made at the very last minute where two people were added and two removed. I asked the Minister why that was done and he has not given me an answer.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Sep 2012)

Jim Walsh: In fact, he said he knew nothing about it, which absolutely flabbergasts me.
