Lisbon Treaty: Statements (Resumed) (18 Jun 2008)

Martin Mansergh: I congratulate Deputy Coveney on a fine, passionate speech. One is tempted to echo the answer given by a local to a visitor requesting directions — "I wouldn't be starting from here" — or perhaps one should take more encouragement from the hoarding at the entrance to the Dublin Port tunnel bearing the words, "There isn't just a choice of A or B. There is probably a C." The question is...

Seanad: Abbey Theatre: Statements (26 Jun 2008)

Martin Mansergh: The Abbey Theatre is a vital national cultural institution. Historically, it was a flagship of the cultural revival, which preceded independence. After independence, it was the first cultural institution to be in receipt of a State subsidy. It staged then and since Irish plays of world stature, other plays of great distinction and significance, as well as some classics of world theatre....

Martin Mansergh: I thank Senators Paschal Donohoe, John Ellis, Joe O'Toole, Ann Ormonde, Donie Cassidy, Dominic Hannigan, Frances Fitzgerald and all Senators for their contributions in what has been a very good debate. I am delighted the matter has been subject to a proper debate. Several Senators, especially Senator Hannigan, paid tribute to the role and importance of the Abbey and I do not believe anybody...

Seanad: Public Private Partnerships (26 Jun 2008)

Martin Mansergh: I thank the Senator for raising this matter. I accept the depths of public concern he has expressed and the importance of the social issue. Seanad: Leinster Lawn (26 Jun 2008)

Seanad: Banking Sector (26 Jun 2008)

Martin Mansergh: I thank the Senator for raising very legitimate issues. Like him, I am also a customer of the Bank of Ireland and I, too, pay tribute to the staff there who deal with me. By way of declaration of interest, I have a daughter who works for the other main banking group. At the outset the Senator will, I am sure, accept that Ireland's full integration into the global economy and financial...
