Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Medical Cards (18 Apr 2024)

Éamon Ó Cuív: Tá áthas orm deis a bheith agam an t-ábhar seo a thógáil anseo sa Dáil. There are 3,000 people living on our offshore islands. It is a very small, but valuable population. There are basic GP services on most of the islands with reasonably large populations, but for all other medical services, islanders must go to the mainland. This imposes all sorts of...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Medical Cards (18 Apr 2024)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I thank the Minister of State for reading out the reply. It is the exact same as I received to a parliamentary question on 6 March 2024. If the Department of Health thinks I am going away, I am not. The reality is the Minister of State addressed the issue at the very end. The script did not address the realities of the issue. I was amused that the officials mentioned the fact that...

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Give Travellers the Floor: Discussion (18 Apr 2024)

Éamon Ó Cuív: Yes. They were very assistive. There are challenges but some progress is being made. A huge issue that we have not tackled to the extent that we would like is the justice system. As has been pointed out, if you go down to the Dóchas Centre you find there a disproportionate number of Travellers, most of whom are there because of poverty. They should not be there. What we really need...

Committee on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community: Give Travellers the Floor: Discussion (18 Apr 2024)

Éamon Ó Cuív: Today was very educational for us and that is important. The challenges are enormous. One thing I have found in politics - and I am at it a long time - is that as soon as you solve one problem, another problem appears on the horizon. That goes right across life. However, that does not justify not trying to solve problems continuously. We need to consider what overall progress we have...

Written Answers — Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht: Pleanáil Teanga (18 Apr 2024)

Éamon Ó Cuív: 18. To ask the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht cé na pleananna nua atá aici agus na beartais nua atá i gceist aici a chur i bhfeidhm maidir le cur chun cinn na Gaeilge agus na Gaeltachta don tréimhse atá fágtha i dtéarma an Rialtais seo; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [16942/24]

Written Answers — Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht: údarás na Gaeltachta (18 Apr 2024)

Éamon Ó Cuív: 36. To ask the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht cathain atá sé i gceist aici an bille leasaithe ar údarás na Gaeltachta a fhoilsiú; agus an ndéanfaidh sí ráiteas ina thaobh. [16941/24]

Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Taithí Oibre agus Intéirneachtaí do Chéimithe Tríú Leibhéal i TG4 - Féidearthachtaí agus Deiseanna: TG4 (17 Apr 2024)

Éamon Ó Cuív: Cuirim míle fáilte roimh na finnéithe ar fad. Bhí mé ag léamh na haighneachtaí nó na cur i láthair a rinne siad. Tá siad spéisiúil. Aontaím go bhfuil gá le tuilleadh Gaelcholáistí ach tá tuairim na bhfinnéithe - seachas Saoirse Nic Aogáin a thagann ón nGaeltacht - ag teastáil uaim ar...

Éamon Ó Cuív: Tá rud beag amháin go ndearna mé dearmad a lua. Creidim féin gur buntáiste mór é intéirneacht bliana. Más intéirneacht trí mhí atá ann, bíonn mí ag tosaigh, mí ag obair agus mí ag críochnú. Is fearr i bhfad do chuile dhuine gur intéirneacht bliana atá i gceist.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Impact of Means Testing on Farm Assist and Other Social Welfare Schemes: Discussion (17 Apr 2024)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I thank all of the delegations for coming in and thank them for their presentations. I listened to the presentations in my office and we also have written copies of them. One of the big shocks in my life was as a 23-year-old. I was given a job as a small farmers' co-operative manager back in the Joyce Country of Connemara. I had no dealings ever with social welfare until then and I was...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Impact of Means Testing on Farm Assist and Other Social Welfare Schemes: Discussion (17 Apr 2024)

Éamon Ó Cuív: Who asset tests?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Impact of Means Testing on Farm Assist and Other Social Welfare Schemes: Discussion (17 Apr 2024)

Éamon Ó Cuív: That is never done on the farm though. That is purely related to other properties but it does not relate to the farm. If a person is farming a farm, the Department does not asset test it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Impact of Means Testing on Farm Assist and Other Social Welfare Schemes: Discussion (17 Apr 2024)

Éamon Ó Cuív: What would Mr. Roddy consider? We are where we are.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Impact of Means Testing on Farm Assist and Other Social Welfare Schemes: Discussion (17 Apr 2024)

Éamon Ó Cuív: No, it is €5,000. It went up from €2,500 to €5,000.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Impact of Means Testing on Farm Assist and Other Social Welfare Schemes: Discussion (17 Apr 2024)

Éamon Ó Cuív: There is one issue that keeps hitting me. Perhaps because of my age, people my age come to me. the issue is the means test for the State pension. The biggest group of people who are on non-contributory pensions are those who have small farms, and small fishermen or inshore fishermen. The amazing thing at the moment is that the total income of small fishermen and small farmers is assessed...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Impact of Means Testing on Farm Assist and Other Social Welfare Schemes: Discussion (17 Apr 2024)

Éamon Ó Cuív: In my experience-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Impact of Means Testing on Farm Assist and Other Social Welfare Schemes: Discussion (17 Apr 2024)

Éamon Ó Cuív: Sorry.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Impact of Means Testing on Farm Assist and Other Social Welfare Schemes: Discussion (17 Apr 2024)

Éamon Ó Cuív: Yes. I do not mean to interrupt but my experience is that it happens quite frequently that payments are paid in different years. They normally would take that into account. That is my experience. Perhaps we have practical welfare inspectors in the west but that is my experience.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Impact of Means Testing on Farm Assist and Other Social Welfare Schemes: Discussion (17 Apr 2024)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I know that.
