- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs: Preservation of the Biodiversity and Ecosystems of Peatlands: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Michael Fitzmaurice: We have a major problem where those who own the land and who farmed it for many years have certain restrictions put on them. If they must go down a route of getting an appropriate assessment, screening out or whatever, that will cost money. We are dealing with farmers who are living on less than half the average industrial wage. Those obstacles put in front of them will bring about an...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Impact of Brexit on Transport Sector: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Michael Fitzmaurice: The Minister is probably aware of this but I am unsure whether the officials are aware of it. On 10 January this year at the European Council a transport amendment was put to include more parts of Ireland in trans-European transport network or TEN-T funding. The amendment came from the European Commission and set out Brexit mitigation proposals relating to the Atlantic corridor. It...

Michael Fitzmaurice: An additional French port has been included.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Impact of Brexit on Transport Sector: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Michael Fitzmaurice: I thank Mr. Burke for his response. I understand an amendment was passed by the European committee on transport on 10 January. Is Mr. Burke familiar with it?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Impact of Brexit on Transport Sector: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Michael Fitzmaurice: Yes. The amendment would allow for the inclusion of Waterford and Rosslare ports and the other areas I mentioned. In 2012 Waterford was connected by rail to Galway and Ballina. The amendment will come under discussion at a trilogue in the coming weeks. Is "trilogue" the correct term to use?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Impact of Brexit on Transport Sector: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Michael Fitzmaurice: I presume Ireland will accept the amendment because it will create a core node, which is to be welcomed. I presume Ireland could table a further amendment proposing the inclusion of places such as Killybegs, Galway Port and Ireland West Airport, Knock. The latter can receive special status as it is in a peripheral area and because of the implications of Brexit, that is acceptable in Europe....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Impact of Brexit on Transport Sector: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Michael Fitzmaurice: To be clear, Waterford Port was not a core node, but under the amendment, it would be included. It is not on the Dublin-Cork or Limerick-Dublin routes.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Impact of Brexit on Transport Sector: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Michael Fitzmaurice: Under the amendment they would become core ports.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Impact of Brexit on Transport Sector: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Michael Fitzmaurice: I ask Mr. Burke to undertake to consider the amendment. If Rosslare Port is to receive the same status as Shannon and Dublin ports, consideration should be given to the inclusion of places such as Killybegs which is right beside the Border, Galway Port and Ireland West Airport, Knock in order to improve the infrastructure of more of Ireland. Ireland West Airport, Knock should be included...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Impact of Brexit on Transport Sector: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Michael Fitzmaurice: Some years ago, the reason given to us was that Rosslare was privately owned. Is that correct?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Impact of Brexit on Transport Sector: Discussion (6 Feb 2019)
Michael Fitzmaurice: It has a unique ownership structure, then. We will not get into that. However, if one looks at the amendment, it is now being put in under TEN-T and will become a core node. If that can be done there, then surely in the context of Brexit, as Deputy Troy pointed out, it can be done on the west and north west with a core node including Killybegs, Galway and places such as Knock included in...

- Comptroller and Auditor General (Amendment) Bill 2017: Second Stage [Private Members] (12 Feb 2019)
Michael Fitzmaurice: I welcome Deputy Calleary's Bill and I support it. I agree with giving more powers. The only thing I worry about is that we are mighty at looking back at the mistakes that have been made in this country but we do not know how to do a contract and stay in budget. That is a major problem. Every excuse has been given for that by Governments over the years. Be it renovating this building or...
