- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Business of Joint Committee
Update from Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (7 Dec 2021) Steven Matthews: I will move to the Green Party slot, which I will take. I compliment the Minister of State, his staff and officials on some of the excellent work that has been done over the past 18 months to two years. It has been hard to keep up with many of the announcements that have made about funding, projects and schemes that are being carried out across the country. Both the Minister of State and...

Update from Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (7 Dec 2021) Steven Matthews: I have another question on national monuments. There are many national monuments around the country, comprising stones, cairns and old structures. There does not seem to be a lot of information on those sites. There is some crossover with the Office of Public Works, OPW, in that regard. Does the Minister of State see any advances that could be make in that area? I am not talking about...

Update from Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (7 Dec 2021) Steven Matthews: Before Mr. MacDonagh comes in, I will give the Minister of State an example. Raheen-a-Cluig is the church on the side of Bray Head. There is nothing in place to indicate what it is to people as they walk by. There is a sign that just states, I think, it is managed by the OPW. I cannot remember if that is what is written on the sign but it probably is. There is a very good local medieval...

Update from Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (7 Dec 2021) Steven Matthews: I do not see anyone offering to come back in. I am aware the Minister of State needs to make contact with staff in the National Parks and Wildlife Service regarding storms. There is so much we did not manage to touch on today - even around the work of Waterways Ireland, the national biodiversity plan for 2022 onwards and the management plans for our national parks and Natura sites. We need...

Update from Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (7 Dec 2021) Steven Matthews: I thank the Minister of State and his officials. He brought the full team here today, which shows the range of work he covers. We will see him again shortly regarding the monuments Bill and the electoral reform Bill and will no doubt have another update from him. I thank him for all the work he is doing. Keep up the good work.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Insurance Issues: Engagement with Insurance Companies (15 Dec 2021)
Steven Matthews: I thank the witnesses for their attendance today. I have two fairly straightforward and simple questions to put to the three companies. Would they support a 30 km/h speed limit in urban areas and towns and on residential roads in order to reduce the risk of fatalities by being struck at a speed above 30 km/h?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Insurance Issues: Engagement with Insurance Companies (15 Dec 2021)
Steven Matthews: I might expand the question a little.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Insurance Issues: Engagement with Insurance Companies (15 Dec 2021)
Steven Matthews: Yes, but I might just to add to the question that the likelihood of a fatality at 50 km/h is about five out of ten people and when it goes to 60 km/h, it is about nine out of ten people. At 30 km/h, there is a 90% chance that there will not be a fatality, although there will be other injuries. I ask the question in that context. The prevalence of SUVs, crossovers and high-fronted vehicles...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Insurance Issues: Engagement with Insurance Companies (15 Dec 2021)
Steven Matthews: I thank the witnesses. It is something we wish to pursue. My second question is also quite simple. It comes directly from a constituent who was shopping around for new home insurance and was told that a tree in his garden would be grounds for refusal of insurance. Do the three companies have any requirement on people taking out home insurance or looking to renew home insurance if they...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Insurance Issues: Engagement with Insurance Companies (15 Dec 2021)
Steven Matthews: I will be happy to refer this constituent to one of the three insurance companies and they can shop around for their new residential insurance from those companies without any fear of penalty for having trees in the garden. I thank the witnesses.

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Urban Regeneration: Discussion (14 Dec 2021)
Steven Matthews: I had suggested, because I know the Seanad is going through a number of votes this afternoon, that as the Seanad becomes free and Senators arrive, I will try to fit them in for their questions. However, if Deputy McAuliffe wishes to take the question now-----
