- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Apr 2012)
Ivana Bacik: It is likely that Irish Water will rival the ESB. It will be important for us as a nation to ensure that we protect a scarce resource, protect and conserve our water supply and do so in a sustainable way. That has patently not been done until now. It is a disgrace how much water we have lost and the poor standard of water infrastructure.
- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Apr 2012)
Ivana Bacik: I call for a debate in the House on how best to pass legislation to protect scarce resources and ensure conservation. There is a general acceptance among the public-----

- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Apr 2012)
Ivana Bacik: It may seem bizarre on a day when there has been a great deal of rain.
- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Apr 2012)
Ivana Bacik: On a rainy day in Dublin perhaps it may seem odd but water is a very scarce resource internationally, as the Senator is well aware.
- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Apr 2012)
Ivana Bacik: As I said, Irish citizens are well aware of the need to ensure conservation and that a fair charging system will play a large part in ensuring the conservation of a scarce supply. I welcome the Government's legislative programme for the coming session that was published yesterday. It is an ambitious programme. Quite a number of Bills are due to be published in the coming session and I hope...
- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Apr 2012)
Ivana Bacik: I know that the Leader will support my call. I also welcome him giving us advance notice of the busy schedule for next week and future debates. It is important to all of us when we order our time.
- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Apr 2012)
Ivana Bacik: These are women's stories, not an ideological line.
- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Apr 2012)
Ivana Bacik: On a point of order, I never opposed water charges.
- Seanad: Human Trafficking and Prostitution: Motion (18 Apr 2012)
Ivana Bacik: I welcome the Minister to the House and am glad of the opportunity to renew this debate. We had a full debate on this issue six months ago. I commend Senators Zappone, Mac Conghail and van Turnhout, as well as the other Independent Senators, for bringing the debate to the floor of the House again. They have kept everyone on their toes as regards timing and have also kept this issue at the...

Ivana Bacik: Where is the Galway tent?
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Apr 2012)
Ivana Bacik: I join my colleagues in expressing condolence to the family of the late Mr. Barry. On the issue of corporate donations, I am glad to hear Fianna Fáil has been converted. It is a case of closing the stable door some time after the horse has bolted but none the less -----
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Apr 2012)
Ivana Bacik: Perhaps it has gone to a large Galway tent rather than a stable. I do not think any of us are aware of what Senator Mooney meant with his reference to Malahide. We remain to be enlightened on that subject.
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Apr 2012)
Ivana Bacik: I welcome last night's contribution from the Minister for Social Protection on the Social Welfare and Pensions Bill 2012. She made it clear that the changes proposed to the lone parents scheme are conditional on adequate child care arrangements being put in place in the next budget. She has laid down an important marker in this regard. I have met with groups representing lone parents and I...
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Apr 2012)
Ivana Bacik: Four brave women who themselves had been through terminations of pregnancy as a result of being pregnant with babies who were not viable and could not survive beyond birth gave harrowing and intimate accounts of the personal tragedies they had suffered from having to terminate their pregnancies in another country and the lack of compassion shown by this State. One of the women stated that it...
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Apr 2012)
Ivana Bacik: On a point of order, we have a culture in Ireland where 4,000 women a year are travelling to England for abortions. I would like to inform Senator Bradford of that.
- Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (19 Apr 2012)
Ivana Bacik: I wish to pay tribute to the late Senator Myles Staunton on behalf of the Labour Party group in the Seanad. I welcome his family and extend my sympathy to his wife, Marianne, his children and family and to his friends and those who knew him in Westport. I did not know him personally but I have a Westport connection, as my great grandmother was a Reilly from the centre of town and I have a...
- Seanad: Sale of State Assets: Statements, Questions and Answers (19 Apr 2012)
Ivana Bacik: I thank the Minister for his comprehensive and very clear outline of the current Government position on the sale of State assets. He has set out very fairly the nature of the programme for the sale of assets and he has given the House certain reassurances that are particularly important to those of us who would clearly prefer not to see us selling State assets. However, as he said, we are...
- Seanad: Order of Business (23 Apr 2012)
Ivana Bacik: Like Senator Darragh O'Brien, I am grateful to the Leader, Senator Cummins, for setting out the reasons for the changes to the schedule of business for this week. All Members will agree it is unfortunate those changes needed to be made and the House will now not sit on Thursday. I am sure everyone accepts that, in view of the need to allow time for amendments to be tabled to the Social...
- Seanad: Order of Business (23 Apr 2012)
Ivana Bacik: I am glad we will not be debating the Bill in its entirety on one day. Arranging for it to be debated on Friday and Monday next will ensure there will be more time between Stages, which is preferable. I also welcome today's debate on the Thirtieth Amendment of the Constitution (Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union) Bill 2012. I again agree with...
