John Lahart: I thank the witnesses. I join my colleagues in wishing the incoming Minister for Education and Skills the very best of luck in a very challenging role. She will have the support of her colleagues and the officials in a very challenging time. I thank the outgoing Minister, Deputy McHugh. Will fifth-year students who are proceeding to sixth year sit the leaving certificate examinations in...

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Impact of Covid-19: Education – Return to School and School Transport (2 Jul 2020)

John Lahart: To summarise, it is the ambition of the Minister, speaking in July 2020, that the leaving certificate will be held in the traditional format in 2021 if, as Ms Fanning says, Covid-19 behaves itself and it is also the ambition of the Minister that the junior certificate will likewise be held.

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Impact of Covid-19: Education – Return to School and School Transport (2 Jul 2020)

John Lahart: I am not trying to trap Ms Fanning. I have a supplementary question. All going well, it is the ambition that those two sets of State exams would continue if, as Ms Fanning said, the virus behaves itself. Having come through what we came through with this year's leaving certificate, if the virus does not behave itself is there a date on or beyond which the NPCPP will decide it cannot trust...

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Impact of Covid-19: Education – Return to School and School Transport (2 Jul 2020)

John Lahart: I will stop Ms Fanning there, because my time is up. I have several questions, but I am grateful for Ms Fanning's response. I will take the answers that the witnesses gave to previous questions on school transport and school transport providers as given in the context of the situation in my constituency.

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Impact of Covid-19: Education – Return to School and School Transport (2 Jul 2020)

John Lahart: Are there any plans to test students or teachers for the virus? Are all schools obliged to implement the Covid-19 return to work form? What are the guidelines from the Department on that matter? This issue may have been covered already, but those advocating on behalf of SNAs are saying that there will be difficulties regarding social distancing when it comes to PEG feeding, meeting...

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Impact of Covid-19: Education – Return to School and School Transport (2 Jul 2020)

John Lahart: I welcome and acknowledge the three leaders of the teachers' organisations and unions. As my colleagues have said, I also acknowledge the deeply conscientious role that teachers in all strata of our school system have shouldered in recent months. It strikes me, as I hear them speaking, that it would help to imbue confidence if there was a level playing field. It can been seen how few of us...

Special Committee on Covid-19 Response: Impact of Covid-19: Education – Return to School and School Transport (2 Jul 2020)

John Lahart: All three of the witnesses mentioned that a proportion of their members, for legitimate reasons of having underlying conditions, may have a difficulty in returning to the classroom. Can each of the witnesses put a figure or percentage on that for their union?

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: School Accommodation (7 Jul 2020)

John Lahart: The Topical Issue matter is to not move the Firhouse Educate Together secondary school to Citywest. We are taking a collegial constituency-wide approach to this and I know the Minister of State, Deputy Brophy, would want to be associated with it. Unavoidably, our colleague, Deputy Duffy, cannot make the debate. I congratulate the Minister on her appointment. As she knows, this is a...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: School Accommodation (7 Jul 2020)

John Lahart: This move to Citywest will kill the school. The Minister is a proud Kerrywoman. We had a brief chat beforehand, for which I am grateful. The move from Firhouse to Citywest is equivalent to moving a school and asking its children to move from Tralee to Listowel with Dublin city-style traffic. For me, at the moment, and without wanting to put the Gaelscoil in any position, that is the...

Microenterprise Loan Fund (Amendment) Bill 2020: Second Stage (Resumed) (8 Jul 2020)

John Lahart: The Minister of State will be responding at the end and I am sure he will take those points on board. I call Deputy Conway-Walsh who is sharing time.
