- Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Na Seirbhísí Uisce agus Séarachais a chuireann Uisce Éireann ar fáil i gceantair Ghaeltachta: Plé. (21 Jun 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Baineann sé le pleanáil forbartha tuaithe i ndáiríre. Tá ceist amháin agam ó thaobh an líne teileafóin. Tá cúpla áisíneacht agus línte teileafón acu. Glaonn tú agus deir siad “má tá tú ag iarraidh seirbhís trí Ghaeilge, brú 1 agus má tá tú ag iarraidh...
Éamon Ó Cuív: Má tá seirbhís trí Ghaeilge ar fáil láithreach agus ar chomh-chaighdeán, tógfaidh mé an ceann Gaeilge ach níl mé chun am a chur amú. An cheist atá agamsa ná seo, agus is ceist phraiticiúil í: nuair a ghlaoim ar cibé líne atá tugtha, brúim uimhir 9 agus níl an duine le Gaeilge ar...

Éamon Ó Cuív: Glacaimid leis go raibh cúigear ann, agus mar a deir tú, abair go raibh cúig glaoch. Bhí fógra i Leitir Mór agus bhí chuile dhuine ag glaoch. Caithfidh mé a rá ag an bpointe sin go pearsanta go b’fhearr liomsa go gcuirfí ar aghaidh mé chuig duine Béarla ná mé a fhágáil gan freagra. Bíonn deifir orm....

Éamon Ó Cuív: Tá mé sásta le sin. Is rogha i bhfad níos fearr é sin. B’fhearr go mbeadh an duine le Gaeilge acu ach má chaithfidh tú an dara rogha a thógáil, b’fhéidir go ndéarfadh duine gur féidir glaoch a chur ar ais orthu agus nach raibh aon deifir an glaoch sin a chur.

Éamon Ó Cuív: An-mhaith, go raibh maith agat. Is é sin an méid atá agam.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: General Scheme of the Safe Deposits Boxes and Related Deposits Bill 2022: Discussion (Resumed) (21 Jun 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I thank the witnesses for the detailed notes they sent. I have noted the various points they made. In regard to the indemnification issue, one of the proposals put to us suggests the Bill is too comprehensive, which relates to the point Ms Byrne made regarding registration and to the points the banks and others made regarding the sale of articles when the boxes are opened. My view, having...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: General Scheme of the Safe Deposits Boxes and Related Deposits Bill 2022: Discussion (Resumed) (21 Jun 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: The thinking behind the 80-year timeline is as follows. We presume the vast majority of people who put items on safe deposit are over 20 years of age, give or take, so that means it is 100 years since they were born. If they were alive today, they would be 100, and that is when you finish this rather long process, starting with the older ones first. The first reaction was to go to the date...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: General Scheme of the Safe Deposits Boxes and Related Deposits Bill 2022: Discussion (Resumed) (21 Jun 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: However, the annual assessment would only arise after a very long time and after this Bill was well tried and tested. As we have said clearly from the beginning, starting back in 1783, when the Bank of Ireland opened, and 1813, when AIB was opened in some form, or one of their banks, many of these deposit boxes go back a long way. This would not be a quick process. By the time we would get...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: General Scheme of the Safe Deposits Boxes and Related Deposits Bill 2022: Discussion (Resumed) (21 Jun 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: It is not a question but a comment. Obviously data protection is an issue, but the State has been publishing records such as census records from 1911. Therefore, there is a precedent for opening very old records. That is why the date issue is key. Obviously they are not going to open up census records beyond a certain date. The appropriate date was debated in Cabinet and the Oireachtas....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: General Scheme of the Safe Deposits Boxes and Related Deposits Bill 2022: Discussion (Resumed) (21 Jun 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I agree, but we try to be careful and we also look to precedent regarding that. These are all issues we will tease out in more detail. Again, it is more the reason a date from way back is preferable.
- An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (14 Nov 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Flood and storm events are, unfortunately, becoming quite common. In each of these events, damage is caused. A significant number of commercial properties and dwellings in Galway city, Oranmore and Clarinbridge were damaged by the recent Storm Debi. I am aware that schemes are available to help these people. However, a number of smaller businesses have losses that far exceed the existing...
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Offshore Islands (14 Nov 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: 17. To ask the Minister for Rural and Community Development the progress made in the past ten years in providing improved pier facilities on islands and on mainland piers serving island ferries; the total amount of money that has been spent improving island serving piers in this time, broken down by year; the piers that have been upgraded; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [49616/23]
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Offshore Islands (14 Nov 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I will not delay the Minister. I will give her a chance to give me a very comprehensive answer. In the past ten years, what progress has been made on the whole issue of piers on islands? They are the equivalent of roads on the mainland and are the only way of getting from one place to another.
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Offshore Islands (14 Nov 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Very briefly, can the Minister tell me exactly when we are going to get the contract signed for Inis Oírr? A detailed study was done with huge delay, and presumably quite considerable costs, by the National Maritime College of Ireland in Cork regarding Inis Meáin. Will the Minister give an update on the outcome of that study and where we are in progressing piers in Inis...

Éamon Ó Cuív: 14. To ask the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment if it is his intention to enter into negotiations with National Broadband Ireland to ensure that all offshore islands are provided with a fibre connection to the mainland as part of the roll-out of the national broadband programme, to ensure equality of service for islanders in this vital service; and if he will make a...
- Written Answers — Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Wind Energy Generation (16 Nov 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: 35. To ask the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment the estimated increase of on-shore wind generation for all years, including 2023 to 2030, in line with our climate action targets; the steps being taken to ensure these targets will be met; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Éamon Ó Cuív: 103.
