Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Ireland Prison Education Strategy 2019-2022: Discussion (5 Jul 2022)

Cathal Crowe: That is a good thing.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Ireland Prison Education Strategy 2019-2022: Discussion (5 Jul 2022)

Cathal Crowe: I thank both witnesses for their contributions. I will remain for the rest of the meeting.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Effects of Long Covid and Provision of Long Covid Care: Engagement with Dr. John Lambert (6 Jul 2022)

Cathal Crowe: No problem. I apologise as I was in a meeting of the Oireachtas transport committee. Many meetings run parallel here. I read Dr. Lambert’s opening statement and I have been following some of the debate from my office upstairs. I have a few questions. Some of Dr. Lambert’s counterparts, for example, The Ohio State University, used baseline information that they had on...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Effects of Long Covid and Provision of Long Covid Care: Engagement with Dr. John Lambert (6 Jul 2022)

Cathal Crowe: In terms of viral longevity, there is no great difference, is there?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Effects of Long Covid and Provision of Long Covid Care: Engagement with Dr. John Lambert (6 Jul 2022)

Cathal Crowe: My next question almost seems contradictory because Dr. Lambert is here talking about long Covid. Has he seen anyone recover to a high level from long Covid? I know the whole idea is that this remains and lingers. However, surely some people have had a pretty good recovery pathway months and months after carrying this long Covid virus.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Effects of Long Covid and Provision of Long Covid Care: Engagement with Dr. John Lambert (6 Jul 2022)

Cathal Crowe: The general advice we have all been hearing over the past two years is that in seven to ten days one should be coming out of this pretty well and that is the recovery point. That is where most of those who get Covid find themselves. I had it in March and, sure enough, on day nine or ten, my antigen tests were becoming negative, my energy levels were up and I was able to get back to some bit...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Effects of Long Covid and Provision of Long Covid Care: Engagement with Dr. John Lambert (6 Jul 2022)

Cathal Crowe: I thank Dr. Lambert for his engagement today. It is midsummer. We are looking into the autumn and more iterations and further Covid waves. As a country, are we sufficiently prepared for the autumn and winter months? Have we, as a nation, let down our guard at this stage?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Effects of Long Covid and Provision of Long Covid Care: Engagement with Dr. John Lambert (6 Jul 2022)

Cathal Crowe: Dr. Lambert's estimation of one in 100 is about right. I was on the train up from Limerick this morning and that is what I saw in shops, on public transport and so on. The worry we all have is that if we end up in a particularly serious situation again in the winter, how to flip that on its head again in order to ensure public buy-in. I do not know if we will ever get that buy-in again....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Vaginal Mesh Implants: Discussion (29 Jun 2022)

Cathal Crowe: Unfortunately, time has run out. Destroying patients' bodies and people losing their walk is not a figment of people's imagination. It is not something a woman dreams of in the night and wakes up believing she has a pain. It is very real pain. That this is real pain and an untold story is something that needs to be central to our work here. The Government and the HSE need to pave an...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Effects of Long Covid and Provision of Long Covid Care: Engagement with Dr. John Lambert (6 Jul 2022)

Cathal Crowe: When we first started seeing Covid before it arrived on our shores, we were watching with horror at night-time footage of Bergamo hospital that showed young people lying on corridor floors, gulping for air. I think the first real insight we had behind the scenes in Ireland was an “RTÉ Investigates” special that went in behind the hospital scenes in Ireland and we could see...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Strategy: Discussion (13 Jul 2022)

Cathal Crowe: I am under pressure.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Strategy: Discussion (13 Jul 2022)

Cathal Crowe: The health committee is to be out there in two minutes.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Strategy: Discussion (13 Jul 2022)

Cathal Crowe: I thank Deputy Ó Murchú. I apologise to our guests. There is incessant chaos here as so many committees coincide. I followed most of the debate upstairs and was juggling another committee earlier. I have a few points I want to make and will not take ten minutes. There is an element of the chicken and the egg to all this. Some people, ideologically, were willing straight away...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Strategy: Discussion (13 Jul 2022)

Cathal Crowe: Everything is more expensive in Clare.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Strategy: Discussion (13 Jul 2022)

Cathal Crowe: It is probably not necessarily an issue for the Department of Transport but for the Department of Finance, but there needs to be a different taxation and tariff treatment for all of this. Agricultural diesel is probably a perfect example of that. It is the same commodity but the colour and price are different. Depending on who you are and the nature of your business, you get a cheaper fuel...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Strategy: Discussion (13 Jul 2022)

Cathal Crowe: If I may jump in on that point, I know of a person in north County Clare who has bought an electric car but has encountered a problem. He lives in a town and has an on-street parking space. It is not his space but, most of the time, it is available for him to park there. He contacted the county council as he or she wanted to run ducting out. The council stated that he does not own the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Strategy: Discussion (13 Jul 2022)

Cathal Crowe: Mr. Meally explained that well and I thank him for that. I have a question for Ms Ward. The Green Atlantic offshore wind farm off the coast of counties Clare, Kerry and Galway is a significant project. That power will be brought on shore at Moneypoint, where there is already a €50 million synchronous compensator converting it to storable hydrogen fuel. The ESB is very involved in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Strategy: Discussion (13 Jul 2022)

Cathal Crowe: I have a final question for Mr. Brennan, after which my time will be up. I have run this point by the Minister, Deputy Eamon Ryan, a few times. Obviously, the SEAI has significant oversight of building energy ratings, BER. When a person buys a house, he or she has a good idea how energy efficient it is and how well it heats and cools and everything else. When it comes to cars, there is...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Strategy: Discussion (13 Jul 2022)

Cathal Crowe: A BER certification, if one likes, for electric cars would make it very consumer friendly. The consumer would have a fair idea what he or she is buying.
