Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Engagement on the Future of Europe: National Youth Council and IBEC (20 Sep 2017)

Seán Haughey: I think the various questions have been asked; that is fine. I am in broad agreement with the witnesses' presentation and I thank them for it, particularly with regard to Brexit. We value their input into that. I will leave my contribution for another day. There is no problem.

UK Withdrawal from the EU: Statements (Resumed) (27 Sep 2017)

Seán Haughey: After the vote in the UK on 23 June 2016, I said in the House that it would be regrettable that a considerable amount of time, effort and resources would have to be expended by the Government, and public administration generally, trying to sort out the Brexit fallout. I said then that this would ensure policy-making in other areas would be delayed. One only need look at the crisis in our...

Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committee Meetings (3 Oct 2017)

Seán Haughey: Given that we do not have a designated Minister for Brexit, it is important that the Cabinet committee on the European Union meet regularly. On the EU summit in Tallinn, I note that it was agreed that the European Union would be a global leader in the digital economy and that the leaders were committed to finalising the digital Single Market within a year. Will the Taoiseach provide a...

Yesterday he informed the House he had read his recent speech in which he set out a vision for Europe. He called for a more sovereign, unified and democratic EU and for the re-foundation of Europe. We can all agree with that. There were things in his speech with which we in this country would...

Seán Haughey: I welcome Mr. Pratt and Ms O'Connell. I attend EMI meetings whenever I can. I thank them for the work they do in providing information to Oireachtas Members and the public regarding activities and developments in the EU generally. The EMI's publication, Just the Facts, is useful for parliamentarians. It is an excellent two-page sheet which condenses all the issues of the day. We are...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Engagement on the Future of Europe (Resumed): European Movement Ireland, Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Assocation and Macra na Feirme (4 Oct 2017)

Seán Haughey: Earlier I made my point about the European Commission quite clumsily. I think Irish people would like to reform the institution in terms of its expense and bureaucracy. That is an area that we need to consider.
