- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: The Windsor Framework and Related Matters: Discussion (2 Oct 2024)
Colm Brophy: I want to come in on that. It is a particular matter that I want to address. One thing I will put to the witnesses upfront is that they will continue to have the support of this committee, the Irish Government and everybody else. It is really important to recognise, however, that we are probably entering a very different phase of thinking by the European Union. What is happening is very...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: The Windsor Framework and Related Matters: Discussion (2 Oct 2024)
Colm Brophy: The irony of that is that the countries that did that deal with the EU accepted some of the principles that are very problematic for a British Government to accept. That is the crux of it. Hopefully, it will be resolved. It has to be resolved. It is going to be a very interesting point as to how the British Government moves. There is also the Commission and its new mandate is starting....

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: European Union-United Kingdom Trade: Discussion (9 Oct 2024)
Colm Brophy: I thank Mr. Harper. We have heard a lot of positive points today which is very welcome. Ironically there have been very few times in the history of our island and the history of Northern Ireland that the unique position that Northern Ireland finds itself in has actually created a great benefit for it. At the heart of all the contributions today is the point that the ability to access two...
- Child Protection: Statements (15 Oct 2024)
Colm Brophy: I am sorry to say this in many ways but the Sinn Féin ethos we now see, which is so clear, is the ethos of "protect the party at all costs", even if that means child protection is put into a distant second place. That is a totally unacceptable ethos for any party. Sinn Féin has sent out its representatives including its party leader in recent days to peddle what amount, I believe,...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Citizens' Attitude to Democracy and the Rule of Law: TASC (23 Oct 2024)
Colm Brophy: We have covered so much and it has been a very discursive type of meeting. There are a few areas I would like to speak about but I will not go on at great length because we all could and I am very conscious of time. There are a couple of areas which I think are important. I really have a problem with this notion that the use of the term "far right" is a throwaway thing. It is not. There...
