- Victims' Rights Bill 2008: Second Stage (Resumed) (25 Jun 2008)
Deirdre Clune: This is an important Bill and I am delighted we have an opportunity to focus on victims, who in many cases feel and are alienated from the justice system. The debacle that has gone on in the past week started with the Minister's hastily arranged press conference and that is an appalling indictment of him. I hope he will take on board some of the proposals contained in Deputy Shatter's Bill,...
- Intoxicating Liquor Bill 2008: Second Stage (Resumed) (26 Jun 2008)
Deirdre Clune: I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the debate. Members have given their views on the state of the nation in the debate regarding alcohol consumption and that is why the debate is important. A number of the measures in the Bill attempt to reduce the availability of alcohol and to focus on binge drinking and licensing. Dr. Gordon Holmes and the alcohol advisory group should...
- Toxic Waste. (26 Jun 2008)
Deirdre Clune: I will ask the Minister of State a succinct question rather than making a long statement. In her opening statement, she said that the Government carried out a comprehensive site investigation in 2004 to determine the levels of contamination at the site. Did that investigation give the full extent of the contamination or have we discovered something new either today in the newspaper or when...

Deirdre Clune: This site was in operation for years.
- Toxic Waste. (26 Jun 2008)
Deirdre Clune: The Minister said that the Government carried out a comprehensive site investigation so it was only a surface site investigation that was not comprehensive and did not determine the full level of contamination. That is the nub of the question and a very serious issue. The Government was not aware of the extent of the contamination until such time as contractors went in at the end of the...
- Toxic Waste. (26 Jun 2008)
Deirdre Clune: The Government paid somebody to carry out a comprehensive site investigation which did not throw up the level of contamination that we now know exists. Was the Government aware in 2004 of the existence of chromium 6, which has been mentioned by the German company, and that this type of contamination was contained in the site?
- Toxic Waste. (26 Jun 2008)
Deirdre Clune: The problem is that this contamination would have been leaking into the waterways. It would have been in the tidal area and there would have been rainfall which would have washed through the site and washed this material into the harbour and environment. It is disgraceful that a full site investigation was not carried out. We now realise that there has only been a skimming of the surface.
- Toxic Waste. (26 Jun 2008)
Deirdre Clune: That is not a full site investigation.

- Hazardous Waste: Statements (2 Jul 2008)
Deirdre Clune: There is considerable concern and people need to have the facts in order to answer the questions for themselves. That would be an important first step for us. Last week the Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Deputy Máire Hoctor, referred to a comprehensive site survey carried out by White Young Green. Its content seems to be quite...

Deirdre Clune: Given the Minister has had a comprehensive report on this matter since 2005, does he know the extent of the remediation work needed? Can the Minister give a commitment that a full budget will be provided to meet the cost of cleaning up? The Minister should have some estimate or idea of this and there should be a commitment.
