Éamon Ó Cuív: We need to change the law.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Draft Regulations on the Operation of the Social Welfare Appeals Office: Discussion (26 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Sorry, there has been a change. I think all of us would testify to that fact and we are on the front edge of that. If Mr. McKeon went around Dáil Éireann and asked the people who deal with social welfare queries if they have seen a change in the way that-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Draft Regulations on the Operation of the Social Welfare Appeals Office: Discussion (26 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: As I said, I am not arguing they are not right, but there has been a change.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Draft Regulations on the Operation of the Social Welfare Appeals Office: Discussion (26 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Too late now.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Draft Regulations on the Operation of the Social Welfare Appeals Office: Discussion (26 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I would like to reinforce what has been said by the Chair regarding the role of public representatives. It is very interesting to stand back and look at life in the round. If I go down the main street of any town, I will find solicitors, tax consultants and accountants. Very few people who have big tax issues make the appeals themselves or deal with their own taxes. It is normally signed...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Draft Regulations on the Operation of the Social Welfare Appeals Office: Discussion (26 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Mr. McKeon mentioned a straw man. If that approach is taken, when might legislative change take place, with the whole rigmarole involved in the changes?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Draft Regulations on the Operation of the Social Welfare Appeals Office: Discussion (26 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Might it take three years?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Draft Regulations on the Operation of the Social Welfare Appeals Office: Discussion (26 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: What happens in the meantime back at the ranch? Perfection has become the absolute enemy of the good. In the meantime, back at the ranch, it would be possible for the Oireachtas to change the wording of the invalidity pension criteria to make it the same as the disability allowance criteria as a holding operation until the Department gets all its work done on the legislation.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Draft Regulations on the Operation of the Social Welfare Appeals Office: Discussion (26 Apr 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: That is what they always tell us.
- Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (4 May 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I have raised this question many times but no progress has been made. Another long, cold winter has gone by. I raised the issue of Travellers living in totally unsuitable mobile homes and caravans. The only response was an inadequate pilot caravan loan scheme that only reached a tiny fraction of the people who urgently require proper accommodation. When will we be able to say each and...
- Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Ceannteidil an Bhille um Údarás na Gaeltachta (Leasú), 2022: Grinnscrúdú Réamhreachtach (3 May 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: Go minic, tá sé deacair cumhachtaí a bhaint den státchóras. Cuirfidh an dream a bhfuil na feidhmeanna acu i láthair na huaire ina aghaidh go dóite. Ar an mbunús sin, bíonn ort tosaíochtaí a shocrú agus a rá cén chuid is tábhachtaí. An chéad cheist atá agam ná dá mbeadh ar na finnéithe...

- Written Answers — Department of Finance: Business Supports (4 May 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: 150. To ask the Minister for Finance the reason the temporary business energy support scheme is based on the difference in electricity costs one year ago and not two years ago as the main increase in price occurred between early 2021 and early 2022 when they levelled off at their continuously high price; whether he intends to amend the scheme to deal with the ongoing high price of electricity...

Éamon Ó Cuív: Gabhaim buíochas leis an Aire Stáit as ucht teacht anseo agus gabhaim buíochas leis an Aire. Fuair mé glaoch gutháin uaithi ag rá nach mbeadh sí ar fáil tráthnóna agus thoiligh mé dul ar aghaidh leis seo. Tá áthas orm an deis a fháil an cheist thábhachtach seo a thógáil leis an Aire Stáit. As the...
- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Social Welfare Eligibility (11 May 2023)
Éamon Ó Cuív: I kindly thank the Minister of State. To be quite honest, whoever in the Department wrote the reply must think I know nothing about the social welfare. They have informed me about all the schemes that the Minister of State and I know about, and that every Deputy the House knows about because we deal with them every week. It is a little bit patronising for the Department to dodge the issue....
