Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Issues Surrounding Water Quality and Supply: Discussion (4 Oct 2022)

Paul McAuliffe: You might have heard the question I put to the EPA and the HSE regarding the security risk at water treatment facilities and whether we had sufficient cybersecurity and physical security in place to prevent a malicious attack on somewhere like Ballymore Eustace which provides 40% of our water supplies. Is that something Irish Water can comment on? What measures are in place?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Issues Surrounding Water Quality and Supply: Discussion (4 Oct 2022)

Paul McAuliffe: That is good to know. I had better be as strict with myself as I will be with others. Deputy Gould is next.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Oct 2022)

Paul McAuliffe: I wish to continue on that. The reason members might focus on that is because many of the recommendations of the Citizens' Assembly on Gender Equality were about tackling issues where gender made a significant difference. There is no doubt that women suffer domestic violence far more than man. That is not to say that men do not experience violence; of course they do. If we are to address...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Oct 2022)

Paul McAuliffe: Yes. In the broader submission in which the domestic violence references were made, there was a broader view - complaint is probably too hard a word – by IBEC that there should be a delay or staggering. There was a public conference held earlier in the year in which the same comments were uttered; in other words, IBEC was suggesting that we should stagger or delay this flexible...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Oct 2022)

Paul McAuliffe: Yes.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Oct 2022)

Paul McAuliffe: I think Ms O’Hare is focusing on the wrong element of it. My suggestion was that IBEC is suggesting that the Government was introducing too much paid leave, citing the extension of parental leave, the introduction of statutory sick pay and the domestic violence legislation. It is a broader tone here; it is not just on the issue of domestic violence. It is a broader tone that the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Oct 2022)

Paul McAuliffe: I accept there are challenges. The question is to which aspect IBEC is opposed. Is it opposed to statutory paid sick leave?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Gender Equality: Recommendations of the Report of the Citizens’ Assembly on Gender Equality: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Oct 2022)

Paul McAuliffe: I accept that. I do not have time for a final question but I make the point that, equally, one cannot ignore how businesses have benefited from or taken advantage of the gender pay gap over many years. Both items have to be put on the balance sheet.

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Bus Services (12 Oct 2022)

Paul McAuliffe: Deputy Devlin provided a litany of buses that have been cancelled. Thankfully, Go-Ahead only operates one bus in our area, the N6, although many would say that one is enough. It does not seem to be able to fulfil the contract that has been given to it. That is significant. When a person is standing at a bus stop at 7.50 a.m., has to be in work for 9 a.m. and the first time a bus arrives...

Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Bus Services (12 Oct 2022)

Paul McAuliffe: I welcome the news that Go-Ahead will have its full complement by Christmas. As I said from the beginning, if a company tendered for a service, it should be in a position to deliver it. In that context, we should not be playing catch-up, particularly where people's lives are concerned. We only have to look at the discrepancy between the number of routes Dublin Bus operates and the number...

Community and Voluntary Sector Workers: Motion [Private Members] (12 Oct 2022)

Paul McAuliffe: I thank the Minister for reading his script a little more quickly to allow me to make a very short contribution of just one minute or 30 seconds. Unfortunately, the Business Committee does not allow the majority of Deputies on the backbenches to make contributions in these debates. That is reserved for the Government. However, I will be here for the debate because, as a former Tús...

2021 Report of the Comptroller and Auditor General - Chapter 9: Implementation of the National Broadband Plan
(13 Oct 2022)

Paul McAuliffe: I thank the witnesses for being with us. On 26 August, Mr. Griffin wrote to the committee regarding the retrofitting programme, the targets and some of the changes in the funding of those. I ask him to help us untangle the carbon revenue levy account, the energy efficiency national account, the climate action account and the movement of funds between those accounts.
