Leaders' Questions (25 Nov 2014)

Maureen O'Sullivan: I am struck by a couple of ironies. One is that the social inclusion programme is targeting those in society with whom these community organisations are working. When I was in the GPO for the launch of the 1916 commemoration programme, I was also struck by how it was not a stone's throw from some of the really disadvantaged communities. If the Rising was about anything, it was about equality.

Leaders' Questions (25 Nov 2014)

Maureen O'Sullivan: However, this is not equality. It is also not an issue that is confined to Dublin. Last week, I attended a meeting for the non-Gaeltacht island communities. Their community development programme is facing what will almost be a complete axing, undermining their front-line services. Deputy Halligan has just told me about a child care centre in a RAPID area in Waterford that provides...

- Human Rights Budgeting: Motion [Private Members] (25 Nov 2014)

Maureen O'Sullivan: Those of us of a certain age and with a certain taste in music might remember a song from way back called "Games People Play". I was struck by some of the lines in it. I will not sing it but the lines are:Games people play every day and night, Never meaning what they say, never saying what they mean, While they while away their hours in an ivory tower. That is the view of many Irish...

Maureen O'Sullivan: I wish to ask the Minister his views on addressing the ongoing issues concerning prisoners in Maghaberry Prison and ex-prisoners and whether he has had any discussions to date with any of the authorities in Northern Ireland.

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Northern Ireland Issues (26 Nov 2014)

Maureen O'Sullivan: As the Minister is aware, a group of Members of the Oireachtas has been visiting Maghaberry Prison over recent years. The most recent visit was on last Monday week when we met both loyalist and republican prisoners. We have met the Prisoner Ombudsman and the head of the Northern Ireland Prison Service. We have met the Minister for Justice, David Ford, MLA, on several occasions, the most...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Northern Ireland Issues (26 Nov 2014)

Maureen O'Sullivan: A number of the prisoners we have met have not been convicted of anything because they are in there on very long periods of remand. When we were there in May, there was great hope that the stock take would lead to progress. We were there last Monday week and one of the aspects of that uncontrolled movement had broken down because of the ambiguity between the prisoners and governors....

Other Questions: Human Rights Issues (26 Nov 2014)

Maureen O'Sullivan: 7. To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade his views with regard to the plight of the Rohingya persons in Myanmar, the fact that their human rights are being taken from them through discrimination at all levels of society; and if he will offer support to the Rohingya community here which focuses on bringing change to this unjust treatment. [44977/14]

Other Questions: Human Rights Issues (26 Nov 2014)

Maureen O'Sullivan: My question concerns the Rohingya people in Myanmar, where they suffer a lot of discrimination, and whether there is any support for the small Rohingya community in Ireland.

Other Questions: Human Rights Issues (26 Nov 2014)

Maureen O'Sullivan: I thank the Minister. It is clear that the human rights of the Rohingya people are not respected. They have been described as the most persecuted ethnic minority in the world and are referred to by certain Burmese politicians as a virus. There is a long way to go before their human rights are respected. There has been a lot of propaganda and brainwashing of the general public against the...

Other Questions: Human Rights Issues (26 Nov 2014)

Maureen O'Sullivan: The term "silent genocide" has been used in regard to the Rohingya people in Myanmar. Considerable EU aid is going into the region. The provision of approximately €700 million in aid is planned from 2014 to 2020 and the provision of aid is also planned for neighbouring countries where Rohingya people have fled. As well as the provision of aid to the region, it is important that...
