Fidelma Healy Eames: Indeed. I ask the Leader to arrange for such a debate. I look forward to it.
- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Jul 2011)
Fidelma Healy Eames: I commend the Leader for arranging for the President of the European Parliament, Mr. Buzek, to come before the House next week, which is important in light of Europe's ever-increasing role in the workings of Ireland. How will this session be conducted? Will it simply be a presentation by the President or will there be an opportunity for Members of the House to engage in a question and...
- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Jul 2011)
Fidelma Healy Eames: I fully accept that time is precious and that at times legislation must be rushed because of deadlines. However, it is important that people who go to the trouble of tabling amendments, putting thought into it with a view to advancing the legislation and making it more effective for the people of this country are, where possible, given time to discuss them. I know that one Member of the...

Fidelma Healy Eames: My question is implicit in what I am saying. I would like a response from the Leader.
- Seanad: Registration of Wills Bill 2011: Second Stage (6 Jul 2011)
Fidelma Healy Eames: I welcome the Minister to the House and share the sentiments of other Senators in wishing her well in the challenging Department she holds. Senator Leyden brought this Bill before a previous Seanad in 2005. They say persistence distinguishes the strong from the weak. Senator Leyden is persistent and is to be congratulated on that basis. Senator Leyden and his Fianna Fáil colleagues, and...

Fidelma Healy Eames: That is the truth.
- Seanad: Order of Business (7 Jul 2011)
Fidelma Healy Eames: A delegation from the National Asset Management Agency attended a meeting of the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party last evening. Like other Members, I had many questions for NAMA whose officials gave us two hours of their time. It was notable that they stood up to rigorous scrutiny.
- Seanad: Order of Business (7 Jul 2011)
Fidelma Healy Eames: I am providing this information for the benefit of the House. The National Asset Management Agency is open to receiving questions and attending meetings and has even provided a special e-mail contact for Oireachtas Members. I propose to follow up on Senator Eamonn Coghlan's comments on the positive energy and inspiration provided by the 107 Special Olympics medalists. It often intrigues me...
- Seanad: Order of Business (7 Jul 2011)
Fidelma Healy Eames: I have asked my question. I want the Leader to invite both the Minister for Education and Skills, Deputy Ruairà Quinn, and the Minister for Social Protection, Deputy Joan Burton, to the House as soon as possible for a broader debate on both issues.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2011)
Fidelma Healy Eames: Fourteen years of absolute power.

- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2011)
Fidelma Healy Eames: I welcome the publication of the Family Home Bill 2011 that Senator MacSharry is to bring before the House. We are all concerned about protecting the family home. Many of us spoke strongly about that in the last Senate, so I welcome a reading of that Bill. With a bit of luck, we will be able to find a way to support many parts of it. I have been reading about the moves made by the Minister...
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jul 2011)
Fidelma Healy Eames: Time is of the essence. I call on the Leader to bring the Minister for Finance or the Minister for Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation before the House and see how we can expedite decisions on behalf of banks so that our companies are not losing their orders and opportunities to employ people. The small and medium enterprise sector is the lifeblood of our economy and I fear for its future if...

Fidelma Healy Eames: Hear, hear.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Jul 2011)
Fidelma Healy Eames: I support the comments of Senator Colm Burke in requesting the Minister of State with responsibility for European affairs to address the House on how our Parliament is effectively or adequately using the Lisbon treaty provisions to put a stay on European legislation being implemented here until it is adequately scrutinised. I was shocked by what the President of the European Parliament said...
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Jul 2011)
Fidelma Healy Eames: The Leader should ensure an apology is forthcoming. The remarks made against my colleague and friend, Deputy Mitchell O'Connor, are a form of bullying. Name calling of that nature is not fitting in any setting and especially here in Leinster House. We need to send out a very strong message that this behaviour is not acceptable. I would like to hear how it is being handled within the walls...
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jul 2011)
Fidelma Healy Eames: As my party's spokesperson on social protection I wish to express my alarm at the discrepancy revealed between PPS numbers and the population of the country. There are 2.6 million more PPS numbers than the population currently in the country. The total of PPS numbers is 7.2 million for a population of 4.58 million. This is ripe ground for abuse of the welfare system.
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jul 2011)
Fidelma Healy Eames: How is it that no Department has picked up on this discrepancy?

- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jul 2011)
Fidelma Healy Eames: I ask the Leader to ask the Minister, Deputy Burton, to ask her new welfare reform commission to conduct an audit of PPS numbers and come up with a foolproof system to ensure that each person has a single PPS number. This is about rights. Anybody can have-----
