Seanad: Order of Business. (26 Apr 2005)

Brian Hayes: In recent months the Government has adopted the Opposition's position on the early release of the killers of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe. I very much welcome the Government's change of heart and the fact that all of us now sing from the one hymn sheet. Can the Leader discover from the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason those responsible for the killing of Detective...

Seanad: Order of Business. (26 Apr 2005)

Brian Hayes: What is the point in raising very important matters in the House if Ministers decide not to reveal their positions to Members but to describe them instead to the media within 24 hours? It is a disgrace to Parliament and unfair to the Leader who has made time available. While not all Ministers are offenders, the Minister for Transport, Deputy Cullen, is very much offside on this issue.

Seanad: Order of Business. (26 Apr 2005)

Brian Hayes: A serious debate took place last Wednesday to which one third of the membership of the House contributed over the course of two hours. The Minister, however, decided not to explain his or the Taoiseach's position to Members but to tell the media the next day. It is a serious disrespect to this House and to Parliament which we must address.

Seanad: Order of Business. (26 Apr 2005)

Brian Hayes: Next time we will charge the Senator.

Seanad: Order of Business. (26 Apr 2005)

Brian Hayes: The Minister will not give the Senator an answer.

Seanad: Order of Business. (28 Apr 2005)

Brian Hayes: Will the Leader take up the matter raised yesterday on the national airwaves with regard to the cutback affecting the State Pathologist, Dr. Cassidy? Until recently she was given a designated Garda driver to ensure she could get to the scenes of crimes in various parts of the country. This is a serious issue. Her job is difficult and gruesome and it is important she gets to crime scenes as...

Brian Hayes: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business. (28 Apr 2005)

Brian Hayes: Good.

Seanad: Order of Business. (4 May 2005)

Brian Hayes: The news of significant job losses from Waterford Crystal in Dungarvan and Waterford city is devastating, particularly for the 490 people who have lost their jobs. Will the Leader organise a debate following today's publication of the latest quarterly report from the Central Bank which shows that indigenous employment in this country suffers from a lack of competitiveness? Some 90% of...

Seanad: Order of Business. (4 May 2005)

Brian Hayes: I ask the Leader to place this item on the Order of Business tomorrow.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed). (4 May 2005)

Brian Hayes: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed). (4 May 2005)

Brian Hayes: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed). (4 May 2005)

Brian Hayes: We should try that more often.

Seanad: Immigrant Workers: Motion. (4 May 2005)

Brian Hayes: The key issue is the way in which the permit system works. As long as the employee is tied directly to the employer and the employer holds the permit, the employer has control. Ireland was brought before the United Nations because of the way our system operates. We need to see changes to give much more control to migrant workers. The Minister says a system similar to the green card will come...

Seanad: Immigrant Workers: Motion. (4 May 2005)

Brian Hayes: The Senator should commence immediately.

Seanad: Immigrant Workers: Motion. (4 May 2005)

Brian Hayes: There were also a few Irish employers.

Seanad: Order of Business. (5 May 2005)

Brian Hayes: It is unusual for a Bill to be rushed through in this manner. However, I understand that it relates to a mistake made in initial legislation concerning ground water and the applicability of the legislation to the bodies established under the British-Irish Agreement. We will support the Bill and ensure that it gets through this House today on the basis that it will help the bodies and ensure...

Seanad: Order of Business. (5 May 2005)

Brian Hayes: The Minister for Health and Children should take up the issue. As a former Minister for Education and Science, and as someone who has particular educational expertise, will the Leader comment on the controversial website www.ratemyteacher.com? I have received complaints about this website from many decent, hard-working teachers in my own constituency and others. Very little can be done to...

Seanad: Order of Business. (5 May 2005)

Brian Hayes: They should not scurry around by means of a website, making anonymous comments. Teachers must be told by both Houses that their work is valued. This is a gimmick used by some as a means of making teachers accountable. People should state their opinions to others' faces rather than anonymously on a website.

Seanad: Order of Business. (5 May 2005)

Brian Hayes: It would be a bandwagon of double salaries.
