Leaders' Questions (23 Sep 2014)

Dessie Ellis: We are not dancing with the troika. Perhaps the Minister does not realise about the €200 million and the national debt.

Housing Provision: Motion [Private Members] (23 Sep 2014)

Dessie Ellis: I move:That Dáil Éireann:notes that: - the State is in the midst of the most severe housing crisis in its history, due mostly to a drastic shortage of social housing; - 89,872 households, representing well in excess of 100,000 men, women and children are currently on local authority housing waiting lists, a rise of 30% in just five years; — approximately 74,000 households...

Housing Provision: Motion [Private Members] (23 Sep 2014)

Dessie Ellis: The then responsible Minister, Deputy Jan O’Sullivan, even promised to put one in place while rejecting a Sinn Féin amendment to the residential tenancies Bill which would have done just that. Tenants cannot afford to have their deposits withheld without justification which is now such a common practice that nearly every renter has experienced it at least once. Many renters do...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Dublin Bus: Chairman Designate (23 Sep 2014)

Dessie Ellis: I thank Mr. Courtney for his presentation. His curriculum vitae is very good. I would like to discuss a number of issues with him. The proposed off-loading of 10% of Dublin Bus routes in 2016 is, in my view, a move towards privatisation. Dublin Bus should remain publicly owned and operated. I am interested in hearing Mr. Courtney's view on that issue. I understand the NTA is currently...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Dublin Bus: Chairman Designate (23 Sep 2014)

Dessie Ellis: Nitelink used to be a major service, but it is virtually gone. After midnight or 12.30 a.m. we have a taxi service for the whole city. There were many problems such as anti-social behaviour and attacks on staff, who have been magnificent over the years. Will the issue be revisited? For the capital city not to have a public transport system after hours is an indictment of the city.

Housing Provision: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (24 Sep 2014)

Dessie Ellis: The Deputy should not believe the newspapers which tell complete and utter nonsense.

Housing Provision: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (24 Sep 2014)

Dessie Ellis: Ah here.

Housing Provision: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (24 Sep 2014)

Dessie Ellis: The Minister mentioned yesterday that the number of people on the housing waiting list has decreased from 98,000 to 89,872 since 2011. He neglected to mention that since 2011, anyone coming into the rental accommodation scheme has been removed from the housing list. The number of people participating in that scheme now stands at 36,000, which represents an increase on the figure of 15,000...

Housing Provision: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (24 Sep 2014)

Dessie Ellis: While such a sum of money would be welcome, it would be too little, too late. The Minister said last night that the Government is pursuing a housing-led approach. To illustrate this, he outlined figures setting out the number of houses being provided. He later listed some of those figures again, either to confuse or to emphasise. The former Minister of State with responsibility for...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: General Scheme of Harbours (Amendment) Bill 2014: Discussion (24 Sep 2014)

Dessie Ellis: I thank everyone for their presentations and I wish to comment on some of the issues raised. One of the major fears in regard to the Bill relates to the transfer of powers to the local authorities and the effect this will have on the boards in terms of decision making and who makes the decisions. Can we have further elaboration on those fears? I understand every port cannot be a tier one...
