Leaders' Questions (9 Nov 2017)

Brendan Howlin: I refer to the finding of the Workplace Relations Commission, WRC, that one of the Government's Ministers of State, Deputy John Halligan, discriminated against a serving civil servant during the course of an interview. A number of issues arise. First, on the payment of the fine imposed, I am concerned that a double standard is being applied. The Tánaiste will recall that when the...

Leaders' Questions (9 Nov 2017)

Brendan Howlin: I thank the Tánaiste for the clarity of her response. The battle for equality in terms of employment for women has been a very long battle and it is not over. On the notion that Ministers would revert to practices that we really thought were gone, I do not think anyone in any interview situation would begin to believe one could ask those sorts of questions now. This level of clarity...

Questions on Promised Legislation (9 Nov 2017)

Brendan Howlin: The Tánaiste knows well that the cost of motor insurance remains a critical issue for many people across the country, particularly in communities with inadequate or, oftentimes, no public transport. She knows that, in January, the report of the cost of insurance working group made a number of recommendations and she announced the Personal Injuries Assessment Board amendment Bill in...

Brendan Howlin: Very good.

Ceisteanna - Questions: Departmental Priorities (14 Nov 2017)

Brendan Howlin: I agree with others that the major social issues facing the Taoiseach, the Government and all of us are housing, homelessness and the health crisis but I want to deal with another issue, namely, the approach of this Government to Brexit. Most of us were a little bit taken aback last week when the Taoiseach told the House that it was his view that sufficient progress would likely be made in...

Ceisteanna - Questions: Taoiseach's Meetings and Engagements (14 Nov 2017)

Brendan Howlin: We now have an imposed budget on Northern Ireland brought about by Secretary of State Brokenshire. In doing so he has, for now, ruled out direct rule, as the Taoiseach has in his answer to this question. What then, in the absence of an agreement ongoing between the parties in Northern Ireland? If direct rule is ruled out by the British Government and the Taoiseach, and if no agreement is...

Leaders' Questions (Resumed) (15 Nov 2017)

Brendan Howlin: As the Taoiseach is aware, my colleague, Deputy Kelly, has been raising questions of fundamental importance with the Minister for Justice and Equality over the past week. Deputy Micheál Martin and others put some of these queries to the Taoiseach yesterday on Leaders' Questions. It is unfortunate that the Minister failed to make clear in his responses to those parliamentary questions...

Leaders' Questions (Resumed) (15 Nov 2017)

Brendan Howlin: I have been a Member of this House for some time. I recall a tribunal of inquiry finding that if people had answered questions here, it would have saved the State both millions and time. It is our job to ask straightforward questions and to hold Ministers to account. That is our job. I have no accusation to make against anybody. I just want the truth.
