Dan Boyle: The Senator is welcome to read my contributions to debates.
- Seanad: Energy Security and Climate Change: Motion (7 Nov 2007)
Dan Boyle: I welcome the debate, even if it might lead us down some dark alleys. In moving the motion, I set out to acknowledge the direction of Government policy. While we have not yet achieved anything in some areas, some Government initiatives are important in their own right. For example, the establishment of the committee on climate change and energy security and the existence of a Cabinet...
- Seanad: Energy Security and Climate Change: Motion (7 Nov 2007)
Dan Boyle: I am prepared to take language tainted elsewhere and put it in a better and more positive context. We are dealing with ignorance and vested interests, to whose advantage our continuation in this way would be. Without the ability to tackle the issue collectively, we will make our problems worse. I disagree with statements to the effect that the paying of credits alone is a sufficient policy...
- Seanad: Energy Security and Climate Change: Motion (7 Nov 2007)
Dan Boyle: The best place to introduce them would be at the Oireachtas committee. Some of the measures listed in the amendment are also listed in the programme for Government.
- Seanad: Energy Security and Climate Change: Motion (7 Nov 2007)
Dan Boyle: I support the amendment in spiritââ
- Seanad: Energy Security and Climate Change: Motion (7 Nov 2007)
Dan Boyle: ââbut it does not add to the motion. If the Opposition wants this area to work, everything should be on the table and the policy should be supported by everyone in political life.
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 Nov 2007)
Dan Boyle: The Order of Business today is No. 1, statements on Government policy on food safety, to be taken at the conclusion of the Order of Business. It is proposed that spokespersons may speak for 12 minutes and all other Senators for eight minutes.
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 Nov 2007)
Dan Boyle: Today we have had a more varied assembly of requests from Members but some were also carried over from yesterday's Order of Business. I regret that I have not been able to announce the availability of the Minister for Health and Children to attend the House. I am confident, however, that we will have confirmation of her intention to come here by the time we meet again next Tuesday. Several...
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 Nov 2007)
Dan Boyle: I am trying to explain the current situation. A consultant report has referred to a debt of â¬50 million being carried over, but that is disputed by the interim committee for the Cork Airport Authority. That is where the matter lies at the moment and I do not believe any firm decision has been made on it.
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 Nov 2007)
Dan Boyle: I will try to find that out. Senator Coffey spoke about the raising of the Père Charles, which is the second vessel to be raised this week. The Minister is to be commended on trying to meet the concerns of the family involved. It is subject to ongoing policy review as to whether this could be done in every circumstance. It does not seem to be standard practice in other countries, but the...
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 Nov 2007)
Dan Boyle: I hope that every question can be answered eventually, even if not within the scope of this reply. I am trying to get through all the submissions that have been made this morning. We should acknowledge the appointment of a press ombudsman operating through the informal press council that the media organisations have established themselves. The fact that the ombudsman is a former Member of...
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 Nov 2007)
Dan Boyle: Senator Ross spoke about Leinster Lawn and I know that the Minister for Environment, Heritage and Local Government has expressed his unhappiness about it in the past. There have been proposals for an underground parking facility to restore the lawn to its former glory, but these have not been funded. It is a matter for the Houses of the Oireachtas Commission and perhaps Members of the House...
- Seanad: Food Safety: Statements (8 Nov 2007)
Dan Boyle: At 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday, 13 November 2007.
- Seanad: Government's Irish Aid Strategy: Statements (13 Nov 2007)
Dan Boyle: I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this debate and do not intend to repeat much of what has been said. The Minister of State has been gracious enough to oversee a debate that has proceeded for several hours. We can have great pride in the Irish aid programme. The many debates we had in the past on our failure to donate 0.7% of gross national product by 2007 are over and...

Dan Boyle: At 10:30 a.m. tomorrow.
- Seanad: Community Child Care Subvention Scheme 2008-2010: Statements (Resumed) (14 Nov 2007)
Dan Boyle: I am a youth and community worker by profession and in the 1980s when I was thinking about progressing along that career path, I sought a professional qualification which would help me to do so. At the time there were not many standard educational qualifications in that area so the course I chose was one in child care at the then Regional Technical College in Cork which is now the Cork...
