Written Answers — Department of Health: Hospital Appointments Status (8 Dec 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: 171. To ask the Minister for Health when a person (details supplied) will receive a date for their hip operation in Galway University Hospital given the exceptional circumstances in this case; if the person will be considered for the surgery under the National Treatment Purchase Fund given the severity of the condition; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [60825/21]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Forestry Sector (9 Dec 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: 14. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine the number of timber felling licences issued in each of the past five years to date; the volume of timber involved; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [60442/21]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Forestry Sector (9 Dec 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I will not delay the House by reading out the question. The supply of timber is vital to the timber industry. The question asks the Minister how we are doing on felling licences. The timber can be standing, but unless you can fell it you cannot get it into the mills. The Minister might provide the information and then I will come back with supplementary questions.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Forestry Sector (9 Dec 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: Has the Minister of State any information to hand on what the capacity of the mills we have in the State would be if they all worked at full capacity and whether the supply can be organised in order that it meets that capacity? Interestingly enough, in view of the debate on the previous question, selling to the primary market, which, outside of the State, is obviously the UK market, is not a...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Forestry Sector (9 Dec 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I ask the Minister of State to put on the record of the House the value of exports of processed timber to this country every year and the total number of people employed in the timber industry, including those working in felling, production and sawmills. It is important to put on the record the value of this industry to Ireland.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Work Permits (9 Dec 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: 88. To ask the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment his plans to widen the sectors that are eligible for work permits; the steps he will take to streamline the system of issuing these permits; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [60444/21]

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Work Permits (9 Dec 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: One of the perennial issues throughout the history of this country relates to how many sectors are short of labour. Time and again, even when looking for State services, we hear the mantra no labour is available. If there is genuinely no labour available here, a debate we could have with the Ministers for Social Protection and Finance in respect of incentives, what will the Government do to...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Work Permits (9 Dec 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: On Tuesday night, I raised the shortage of home care workers. It is a skilled job, but one that does not require much formal qualification. It appears that the Government's system in this case finds it impossible to get enough people in the State to provide those services. People who are in critical situations are not getting care. On the other hand, I understand that the work permit...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Work Permits (9 Dec 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: It is cold comfort for somebody who is waiting for care to be told that all these processes are being gone through while in the meantime there are no services. We know that labour shortages are endemic in this society. We have to import most of the deckhands on fishing boats. There are delays in the licences in that area. Amazingly, we are very short of people in the hospitality sector....

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Work Permits (9 Dec 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: We have not seen them.

Joint Oireachtas Committee On Key Issues Affecting The Traveller Community: Business of Joint Committee (18 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: We have a quorum. I welcome all members to our public session. I have apologies from Senators Eileen Flynn and Ned O'Sullivan. The Ceann Comhairle of the Dáil and Cathaoirleach of the Seanad have appealed to everybody in the parliamentary community to continue to follow public health advice, wear a mask and maintain social distancing. I request that members, witnesses and staff use...

Joint Oireachtas Committee On Key Issues Affecting The Traveller Community: Review of Traveller Inclusion Policy, Education and Health: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I apologise to the Minister for our delayed start. Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth is quite a mouthful. I thank the Minister, Deputy O'Gorman, and welcome him to the meeting. Before we hear from him, I suggest that we publish his opening statement on the web. Is that agreed? Agreed. Based on the evidence given by witnesses appearing before this...

Joint Oireachtas Committee On Key Issues Affecting The Traveller Community: Review of Traveller Inclusion Policy, Education and Health: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I thank the Minister for a comprehensive presentation.

Joint Oireachtas Committee On Key Issues Affecting The Traveller Community: Review of Traveller Inclusion Policy, Education and Health: Discussion (18 Nov 2021)

Éamon Ó Cuív: I understand the Minister can remain here until 2.45 p.m. so there are fewer than 15 minutes left. Deputy Mitchell is next and I am after her. If we keep it tight, there might be time left to go around very briefly for a one-minute round of questions.
