- Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Apr 2010)
Mark Daly: I also agree with Senator à Murchú's call to name Dublin Airport after Tom Clarke. Moreover, attempts are under way at present, in which Senator à Murchú has been involved for many years, regarding the repatriation of the remains of Thomas Kent from Cork Prison. As next Wednesday marks the official national commemoration in Arbour Hill, which is being led by the President, I call on all...
- Seanad: Order of Business (20 May 2010)
Mark Daly: This week we will see the publication of a â¬24 million Interphone study of the potential health effects of mobile phones. I ask the Leader to bring the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources to the House to discuss the matter. Data for the study stopped being collected in 2004 and six years have been spent arguing about what should and should not be included in the...
- Seanad: Order of Business (1 Jun 2010)
Mark Daly: Yesterday morning, Irish citizens were kidnapped in international waters by the Israeli navy. Turkish citizens were also killed by the Israeli navy on a boat carrying aid to Gaza. Citizens of Palestine have been denied the basics in life to live by the blockade imposed by the Israeli army. John Ging, an Irishman, former captain in the Irish Army and the head of UNRWA, the United Nations...
- Seanad: Order of Business (1 Jun 2010)
Mark Daly: I thank the Cathaoirleach. The Israelis put out the story that they had been attacked first. We are well aware in this country that 13 civilians were killed in the civil rights march and that the security services in Northern Ireland immediately put out the story that they had been fired on first and that those on the march had been carrying weapons. We all know the truth behind that...
- Seanad: Order of Business (1 Jun 2010)
Mark Daly: There was an amazing lady on the ship we were due to get on, Heady Etti, who is 85 years of age. In 1939 at the age of 14 years she was sent from Germany by her parents to survive the Holocaust.
- Seanad: Order of Business (1 Jun 2010)
Mark Daly: My final comment is that violence begets violence. We know in this country that there is only one solution to the problems being experienced in Israel.
- Seanad: Order of Business (2 Jun 2010)
Mark Daly: I, too, welcome the release of Mr. Shane Dillon and others. Shane is due to meet the Minister for Foreign Affairs at 12.30 p.m. today to outline his experience of the attack on the flotilla in international waters. Lest we forget the pressures on Israel, five militants were killed yesterday, three of whom had fired rockets into Israel and two of whom had been in a fire fight with Israeli...
- Seanad: Adult Education: Motion (2 Jun 2010)
Mark Daly: I am conscious a number of other Senators would like to contribute and, therefore, I will be brief. I welcome the Minister of State to the House. The figures he outlined are impressive but more needs to be done and cutbacks will have to be reversed in the fullness of time. The day will never come in Ireland when we will be able to say we spend enough on lifelong learning or education. In...
- Seanad: Interception of Gaza-bound Humanitarian Flotilla: Statements (2 Jun 2010)
Mark Daly: I welcome the Minister to the House and I thank Senator Ann Ormonde, the spokesperson on foreign affairs, for allowing me to lead off on this issue. I think the Irish people appreciate the Minister's great efforts in this matter because he has provided leadership not only in Europe but throughout the world in condemning the actions of the Israeli Government. On behalf of the Irish people, I...
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (3 Jun 2010)
Mark Daly: That is something coming from Senator Buttimer.
- Seanad: Confidence in the Taoiseach: Motion (16 Jun 2010)
Mark Daly: I thank Senator Carroll for sharing time. Lemass was a great example to all of us. The Taoiseach, Deputy Cowen, often refers to him. He stated that Lemass instinctively grasped that in difficult economic times, confidence was the gold standard. In today's circumstances it is worth noting that he sought confidence as a necessary precondition for growth and for pioneering a flourishing...
- Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (22 Jun 2010)
Mark Daly: I, too, extend my sympathy to the family of Peter Callanan on his sad passing. As a Cork man and Kerry man, respectively, Peter and I had much rivalry and when Kerry inevitably beat Cork, he always had a kind word. I will always remember his ferocious handshake. Being greeted by him was like gripping iron. When Peter spoke about his illness, it was hard to imagine that a man with such a...
- Seanad: Order of Business (23 Jun 2010)
Mark Daly: I ask the Leader to bring the Minister for Finance to the House to discuss proposals which have appeared in the media and the report of an bord snip nua last year on the reintroduction of a property tax. There is currently a â¬200 charge on second homes, which is equitable and fair because if people have a second home, they should be able to afford the â¬200 to help infrastructure in the...
- Seanad: Order of Business (23 Jun 2010)
Mark Daly: To impose a property tax on people in negative equity seems to be highly unjust. I ask for the Minister for Finance to come to the House to outline his position on this issue because such an imposition in the budget would be a serious burden on people who already have mortgages. Half of what they pay in mortgages goes to a payment they have given to the Government up front.
- Seanad: Criminal Justice (Psychoactive Substances) Bill 2010: Second Stage (23 Jun 2010)
Mark Daly: I welcome the Minister and the Bill which follows the misuse of drugs order presented in May to proscribe over 200 drugs. Last year drug dealers were coming up with a new version of a drug every two weeks to get around the law. The Bill will close down head shops. There is a provision to make it a civil rather than a criminal offence which means the matter can be dealt with in a civil...

Mark Daly: Cathaoirleach, the Senator's time is up.

- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Jul 2010)
Mark Daly: No one knows that more than me.
- Seanad: Fire Service (6 Jul 2010)
Mark Daly: The fire brigade service in Kenmare is a professional service provided by very committed firemen deserving of the best equipment and facilities. The fire brigade station location has varied through the years. In the 1940s and 1950s it was a shed in the corner of the butter market in Kenmare with a fire pump pulled by a car. It was operated by men such as Dan Dooley, Jerry Shea, Sonny...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Jul 2010)
Mark Daly: We had two by-elections last year. Does Senator Buttimer not remember them?
