Terry Leyden: Indeed.
- Seanad: Freedom of Information (Amendment) Bill 2003: Report and Final Stages. (20 Mar 2003)
Terry Leyden: If the Senator accepts that, I advise him to withdraw all the amendments because he is wasting his time. That is my advice to him. The Minister has made the position clear. He, in conjunction with his officials â and I disagree with Senator McDowellâ
- Seanad: Freedom of Information (Amendment) Bill 2003: Report and Final Stages. (20 Mar 2003)
Terry Leyden: Of course he will listen. Senator McDowell referred to the Minister of State, Deputy Michael Ahern. He acquitted himself very well, as did his staff, and I wish to make that quite clear. Each Opposition amendment was considered and responded to in a detailed manner. It was clear that they were informed about the Bill and they defended it well. The Minister is in the House now and he will take...
- Seanad: Freedom of Information (Amendment) Bill 2003: Report and Final Stages. (20 Mar 2003)
Terry Leyden: I accept that, but Senator O'Toole seems to want to accept everyone's view but that of the Minister and the Department of Finance.
- Seanad: Freedom of Information (Amendment) Bill 2003: Report and Final Stages. (20 Mar 2003)
Terry Leyden: I was delighted to get the opportunity last week to discuss this issue at the committee and to put to the commissioner the situation that exists in the House. While it was good to be able to deal with a senior official who could respond in the appropriate manner, I still fundamentally disagree with him making comments in regard to a Bill that is before the Oireachtas. His job was to comment...
- Seanad: Freedom of Information (Amendment) Bill 2003: Report and Final Stages. (20 Mar 2003)
Terry Leyden: It seems to me that we are discussing amendments recommended by the commissioner.
- Seanad: Freedom of Information (Amendment) Bill 2003: Report and Final Stages. (20 Mar 2003)
Terry Leyden: I disagree with the view put forward in this amendment. I hope we vote it down. I compliment the Minister on the Bill. In due course he will deliberate on the views expressed and the Government will make the final decision. We should also respect its right to have a view on the Bill.
- Seanad: Freedom of Information (Amendment) Bill 2003: Report and Final Stages. (20 Mar 2003)
Terry Leyden: We discussed this matter in great detail on Committee Stage. Iris Oifigiúil seems to be a redundant publication as far as I can see. No one in the House has a copy of it or knows where to obtain it. It used to be circulated some years ago but it is now the last place someone who wanted to find an information officer would look. The simplest way to do so is through the telephone directories....
- Seanad: Foreign Conflicts: Motion. (21 Mar 2003)
Terry Leyden: I wish to share time with the Leader, Senator O'Rourke.
- Seanad: Foreign Conflicts: Motion. (21 Mar 2003)
Terry Leyden: I welcome the Minister of State who has played an important humanitarian role since he was appointed. He made his position clear in recent months in the House. I compliment the Leader and the Government on the pragmatic and practical motion before us. This is the first major war of the third millennium, although, unfortunately, the conflict in Palestine continues unabated. However, the Iraqi...
- Seanad: Foreign Conflicts: Motion. (21 Mar 2003)
Terry Leyden: Other supporters have not participated in the debate while a number of Dáil Members absented themselves from the vote on the motion yesterday. It was unwise. They would be more comfortable on our side of the argument.
- Seanad: Foreign Conflicts: Motion. (21 Mar 2003)
Terry Leyden: I recommend that Fine Gael Members should endorse the motion which states the House "declares its commitment to the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Iraq and welcomes the stated intention of the coalition to act swiftly to address the food and humanitarian needs of the Iraqi people". The Minister is meeting the non-governmental agencies next week. He is making available...
- Seanad: Foreign Conflicts: Motion. (21 Mar 2003)
Terry Leyden: We must stand by America in this regard. More than 100,000 people work in 506 American companies in this country. I also recognise the right of those who protested yesterday with passion and fury because they showed their deep commitment. This is a free democracy where people can protest, and rightly so. However, we are pragmatists and we must ensure our continued good relationship with the...
- Seanad: Finance Bill 2003 [ Certified Money Bill ] : Committee and Remaining Stages. (26 Mar 2003)
Terry Leyden: I welcome the Minister. NEW SECTIONS. Recommendations Nos. 1 and 2 not moved.
- Seanad: Finance Bill 2003 [ Certified Money Bill ] : Committee and Remaining Stages. (26 Mar 2003)
Terry Leyden: It is very open. Acting Chairman (Mr. Leyden): I am required to put the following question in accordance with an order of the House of this day: "That recommendation No. 12 is negatived; that the sections of the Bill undisposed of, Schedules 1 to 6, inclusive, and the Title are hereby agreed to; that the Bill is accordingly reported to the House without recommendation; that Fourth...
- Seanad: Employment Permits Bill 2003: Second Stage. (27 Mar 2003)
Terry Leyden: I welcome the Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Deputy John Browne, and express my gratitude to the Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Deputy Michael Ahern, for his contribution. The Employment Permits Bill 2003 allows for full freedom of access to the labour market by nationals of new EU member states...
- Seanad: Employment Permits Bill 2003: Second Stage. (27 Mar 2003)
Terry Leyden: That would certainly be of significance.
- Seanad: Employment Permits Bill 2003: Second Stage. (27 Mar 2003)
Terry Leyden: They will vote for Fianna Fáil because it was Fianna Fáil which got the referendum passed, with the help of the Fine Gael Party.
- Seanad: Employment Permits Bill 2003: Second Stage. (27 Mar 2003)
Terry Leyden: I am only expressing the views of the electorate. If anyone knows my record, in my electoral area, they will not require much conversion because Fianna Fáil is the people's party. It is neither a branch of Democratic Left, the Labour Party nor any of those concoctions which had a very suspect past. They will not want to get involved with an organisation which was pro-Moscow.
- Seanad: Employment Permits Bill 2003: Second Stage. (27 Mar 2003)
Terry Leyden: They will not want to get involved with a branch of a party which went to Moscow and Korea looking for funds. Democratic Left-the Labour Party has a very colourful record. The Labour Party was grand before the take-over by Democratic Left. It made one of them president, one leader and one deputy leader. However, that is its democratic right. Fianna Fáil will never hand the party over to any...
