Select Committee on Health: Estimates for Public Services 2023
Vote 38 - Health (Further Revised)
(19 Apr 2023)

David Cullinane: I want to ask the Minister about two separate local issues. I do not often use my opportunity to raise local issues but they are obviously important. There was a proposal to build an orthopaedic unit, a new stand-alone centre of excellence for University Hospital Waterford. This was announced a long time ago and the former CEO of the hospital group briefed Oireachtas Members in the south...

Select Committee on Health: Estimates for Public Services 2023
Vote 38 - Health (Further Revised)
(19 Apr 2023)

David Cullinane: The Minister did not answer this point but I am assuming it is not unreasonable to ask how many beds were delivered and what the capital and current cost of those were over five years.

Select Committee on Health: Estimates for Public Services 2023
Vote 38 - Health (Further Revised)
(19 Apr 2023)

David Cullinane: It strikes me as bizarre that we have to keep pushing and asking and then getting half answers. Surely it is reasonable for the Opposition to ask for simple information that should be provided quickly.

Select Committee on Health: Estimates for Public Services 2023
Vote 38 - Health (Further Revised)
(19 Apr 2023)

David Cullinane: I have asked for it and I have not got it so if it could be forwarded to me, I would appreciate it.

Select Committee on Health: Estimates for Public Services 2023
Vote 38 - Health (Further Revised)
(19 Apr 2023)

David Cullinane: Surely the Department would know how much it cost. There is a problem if it does not. It is not about what we will do in the future but about what we have done. How many beds were delivered over the last five years and how much did they cost?

David Cullinane: 254. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, and Local Government the number of affordable housing units delivered via the cost rental equity loan, the affordable housing fund and project Tosaigh in County Waterford in each of the years, 2016 to 2022; and the number planned to be delivered in 2023 with a breakdown of units per scheme and average price of units by unit size, in tabular...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Challenges in Hospitals: Minister for Health (26 Apr 2023)

David Cullinane: Before I go into the substance of this session on hospital overcrowding, I have questions on two other matters for the Minister. Last week, when the Minister was in, we talked about the report from Dr. Maura Quinn. Can he again confirm that the Government has accepted all of the recommendations in that report, and that they will be implemented, and , more importantly, that every civil...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Challenges in Hospitals: Minister for Health (26 Apr 2023)

David Cullinane: Could I also ask the Minister about the report into the Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Act 2018, which is being published today? Perhaps it has already been published. The Irish Timespublished it last night for the Minister, I understand, but it is being formally published today. Given that there are legislative changes as part of that, could the Minister, very briefly,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Challenges in Hospitals: Minister for Health (26 Apr 2023)

David Cullinane: I want to finish on this point and go on to the other issues. The committee should absolutely engage with the author of the report and have discussions about how those recommendations were arrived that, and can form opinions but, ultimately, the Government, or whatever Government is in place, has to make decisions on the implementation of the recommendations. Whatever legislative change...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Challenges in Hospitals: Minister for Health (26 Apr 2023)

David Cullinane: Can I come to some of the proposals and solutions? I accept there has been some progress but it is quite limited given the major increase that we have seen since 2015. We certainly have a long way to go to get anywhere near the Sláintecare targets. I want to come to some of the solutions, because they are important. Of course, I welcome the rapid build plan for beds, and the 1,500...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Challenges in Hospitals: Minister for Health (26 Apr 2023)

David Cullinane: We will wait and see what comes to Cabinet. We need that to happen very quickly. What is the indicative timeframe for the delivery of the elective-only hospitals? There is a lot of talk about these hospitals. We all support them, whatever about the locations that some people might have their own views on. What is the timeframe for their delivery? I want to make a final point to the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Challenges in Hospitals: Minister for Health (26 Apr 2023)
