Christopher O'Sullivan: From my perspective, in terms of farmers doing their bit for nature, they want to restore habitats and rewild. However, whatever way you want to phrase it, there is going to have to be proper payment and proper compensation. ACRES has certainly had a lot of interest. Many farmers have signed up for that - close to 40,000 - but the measures need to be bigger and, therefore, the payment and...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Finalisation of Draft National Energy and Climate Plan and the National Long-Term Strategy: Discussion (28 May 2024)
Christopher O'Sullivan: I have one last point before we move on. We are looking for solutions here and in many ways the rate of pace that we reduce emissions is the frustrating thing. I put it to the Minister before that hydrotreated vegetable oil, HVO, has a role to play in transport. The Minister mentioned how we decarbonise freight, and I think it has a role there and in home heating also. We know that HVO...

Christopher O'Sullivan: The target is 400,000 heat pumps and we have only done 6,000 so far, so obviously the rate of pace is slow. I am backing the Minister when I say that the solution in the long term is electrification of our heating systems, but there is a technology, HVO, and we should not be ignoring it for home heating.

Christopher O'Sullivan: I thank the Cathaoirleach GnĂomhach; he is looking good in the Chair. I also thank the Minister of State for taking this Topical Issue. Primary schools principals right throughout Ireland are screaming in an effort to retain their special education teacher, SET, allocations. The new criteria are flawed and are not working. I know this because schools throughout my constituency are...
- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Special Educational Needs (29 May 2024)
Christopher O'Sullivan: I thank the Minister of State. We are hearing that the number of special education teachers has increased and that the allocations are increasing but I am telling him that this is not the reality on the ground. The fundamental point is that schools are being punished for doing their job correctly and for improving numeracy and literacy. We need to go back to taking account of those complex...
- Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committees (29 May 2024)
Christopher O'Sullivan: In a slight departure from the triple lock, I will bring the Taoiseach back to Bere Island off west Cork. The Department of Defence has an important training facility there for naval personnel. Unfortunately, there is an issue with Department of Defence-owned infrastructure there, namely, a slipway at Lawrence Cove. It is an important slipway used by naval personnel but also by a car ferry...
