- Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (1 May 2024)
Marian Harkin: The Taoiseach already will have received an invitation to visit Dromahair to meet the local community regarding the decision to locate 155 IP applicants in the only hotel not just in Dromahair but in the whole of north Leitrim, despite the Government's new policy of not using the last hotel in any town. For context, pro rata, 155 applicants in Dromahair equates to about 77,000 in Dublin...
- Gambling Regulation Bill 2022: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (1 May 2024)
Marian Harkin: I add my voice to those who are asking the Minister of State to separate fundraising from gambling. He said there is a difference and that he will bring forward amendments in the Seanad. That is crucial. I know he has heard many examples today but I want to give him one or two as well. Listening to my local radio station earlier, I heard an advertisement for North West Hospice radio...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: EU Regulations and Directive on International Protection, Asylum and Migration: Discussion (Resumed) (30 Apr 2024)
Marian Harkin: I thank the Chair and the witnesses for coming today. I missed some of their contributions, although I quickly scanned their documents earlier. Unfortunately, I was held up with local issues which were also about migration. It is in all of our inboxes and telephone calls these days. To come back to what we are discussing here today, I had a look at the votes in the European Parliament....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: EU Regulations and Directive on International Protection, Asylum and Migration: Discussion (Resumed) (30 Apr 2024)
Marian Harkin: To clarify, is Mr. O'Neill referring to Ireland at the moment, or under the pact?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: EU Regulations and Directive on International Protection, Asylum and Migration: Discussion (Resumed) (30 Apr 2024)
Marian Harkin: That issue was raised here the last day. If we have judicial reviews, that the timeframes that are spoken about in the pact simply could not apply here because no Government can put a timeframe on how long it takes for a judicial review.

Marian Harkin: 75. To ask the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform to explain the different pension arrangements that are in place for members of An Garda Síochána who joined the force pre-and post-1995; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19825/24]
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Public Sector Pensions (2 May 2024)
Marian Harkin: Will the Minister explain the different pension arrangements in place for members of An Garda Síochána who joined the force pre- and post-1995? In particular, I want a timeline as to when there will be a change in the system whereby gardaí who retire on full pension after 30 years are forced to claim jobseeker's benefit for nine months and then jobseeker's allowance until they...
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Public Sector Pensions (2 May 2024)
Marian Harkin: I thank the Minister for that response but, of course, this is the issue at hand. The Minister is liaising with the Department of Justice and the Department of Social Protection to find a solution to this anomaly. Gardaí who joined the force post-1995 seem, at first glance, to receive the same level of pension entitlement. If we look at what they have to do to receive the pension,...
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Public Sector Pensions (2 May 2024)
Marian Harkin: I am really pleased to hear that because this requirement applies to gardaí who joined post-1995 and next year all these members will have served 30 years. This issue, therefore, must be dealt with. I say this because many gardaí have told me that when they have tried to explain to the Department of Social Protection that they are not jobseekers and are, in fact, retired members...

[20072/24]
- Affordable Housing: Motion [Private Members] (8 May 2024)
Marian Harkin: In my brief two minutes, I will make a few points about the housing situation in the north west. First of all, the ceiling for the first home scheme for Sligo is €325,000. However, at present, there are no new builds in Sligo for €325,000, therefore, there are no new homes in Sligo that are eligible for this scheme. The ceiling price of €325,000 remains unchanged for...
- Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: EU Agreements (9 May 2024)

- Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: EU Agreements (9 May 2024)
Marian Harkin: I very much welcome the fact that Ireland, along with some of our European colleagues, proposes to recognise the state of Palestine before the end of the month. I believe the Minister's work and leadership on this matter has been very positive. However, I want to raise another issue that is very important, namely, the EU-Israel trade agreement, something I have raised many times in the...
- Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: EU Agreements (9 May 2024)
Marian Harkin: I am pleased to hear that by February the Government had moved to this point. I, along with my colleagues in the Independent Group, wrote to the Commission last November. Article 2 of the trade association agreement is very clear and states that the provisions of the agreement shall be based on respect for human rights and democratic principles to guide internal and international policy and...
- Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: EU Agreements (9 May 2024)
Marian Harkin: I thank the Minister. As I said, I appreciate his work on this. At the same time, we are a party to this trade agreement. We signed it and voted for it in the European Parliament, and the Government ratified it. Therefore, the Government has a responsibility to do whatever it can. I know this issue was raised by the Government in February. As I said, I raised it with the then Minister,...
