Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Sustainable Development Goals: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Paddy Burke: Which country is at the top?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Sustainable Development Goals: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Paddy Burke: We are considered to have a very good social welfare system. Ukrainians seem to be coming here because of the social welfare system, in some cases. However, we are still only ninth out of 16. Our poverty line is €318 per week. I wonder what is the equivalent figure for the country in the No. 1 spot. Of course, the survey takes healthcare and everything into consideration.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Sustainable Development Goals: Discussion (28 Jun 2023)

Paddy Burke: Coalition 2030 states that all of this area should be moved to the Department of the Taoiseach. One cannot go any higher than the Department of the Taoiseach. On the other hand, the witness is saying that there should be a future generations commissioner, who would not have any power in the area of developing policy. What would the future generations commissioner do? It is another office...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Jul 2023)

Paddy Burke: We have seen the recent Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, report on septic tanks, pollution of lakes and so on. I think there is a grant of €5,000 available from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage for upgrading septic tanks. That is inadequate. I call on the Leader to contact the Minister. It is very hard to get a contractor to do a small job installing a...

Seanad: Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2022: Report and Final Stages (5 Jul 2023)

Paddy Burke: With regard to the investigation and the court, where does jurisdiction lie with regard to the likes of EU countries and countries outside the EU such as the UK? Can the people who are being investigated or brought to court move jurisdiction to another state outside the EU such as the UK and look for his or her case to be moved to that state if he or she is being prosecuted in an EU state?...

Seanad: Ban on Dumping New Products Bill 2022: Second Stage (5 Jul 2023)

Paddy Burke: I welcome the Minister of State. I compliment Senator Boylan on bringing forward the Bill. Nothing ever stays the same. The longer we live, the more we know. I knew very little about this type of practice until the Bill was brought forward by Senator Boylan and Senator McGahon asked me to take in on his behalf from the Fine Gael side. There was a time that my wife and I were involved in...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (6 Jul 2023)

Paddy Burke: I would also like to be associated with the expression of sympathy to the late Brendan Daly. He was a very good Member of this House, very active in all aspects of Irish life and always brought those issues to the fore here in this Chamber as well as in the other Chamber. I ask the Deputy Leader that we might have a debate in the next term with the Minister, Deputy Ryan, on power...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: General Scheme of the Civil Registration (Electronic Registration) Bill 2023: Department of Social Protection (5 Jul 2023)

Paddy Burke: I welcome the departmental officials to the committee. What Mr. Daly has outlined is very interesting. With online registration of someone getting married, dying or whatever, where does the responsibility lie? Is it the responsibility of the person getting married? If people do not register, is there a breach of the law?
