- Seanad: Order of Business (22 Nov 2012)
Rónán Mullen: I wish to raise a point of order.
- Seanad: Order of Business (22 Nov 2012)
Rónán Mullen: My point of order is that it cannot be the case that a Member of this House may not advert to the written text of an academic or a person and draw certain conclusions.
- Seanad: Order of Business (22 Nov 2012)
Rónán Mullen: It is a point of order.
- Seanad: Order of Business (22 Nov 2012)
Rónán Mullen: I am asking the Cathaoirleach to tell us how he can possibly prevent me from reading out a text and drawing a conclusion from it as it relates to a matter of current public interest.
- Seanad: Order of Business (22 Nov 2012)
Rónán Mullen: Yes, and I explained my question but the Cathaoirleach went further.
- Seanad: Order of Business (22 Nov 2012)
Rónán Mullen: The Cathaoirleach went further and said that I could not refer to the text. How can that be?
- Seanad: Order of Business (22 Nov 2012)
Rónán Mullen: My question is whether the Leader will invite the Minister for Health to the House to explain these two urgent reasons for having an independent inquiry. I am proposing that a retired judge, somebody who understands the Irish system and who is not seen to be biased one way or the other, be called in to chair the inquiry.
- Seanad: Request to move Adjournment of Seanad under Standing Order 30 (22 Nov 2012)

Rónán Mullen: I have not finished the wording. I ask whether such a person is a suitable person to be appointed by the health service------
- Seanad: Order of Business (27 Nov 2012)
Rónán Mullen: I agree with Senator Darragh O'Brien's comments about the unfortunate way in which the expert group report was leaked. I ask the Leader for an early debate in the Seanad on the content of the expert group report. It is very unsatisfactory that this has been leaked and we have not had an opportunity to comment on its strengths, flaws or what has been included or excluded. I share the calls...
- Seanad: Order of Business (27 Nov 2012)
Rónán Mullen: I am asking a question on the basis. With regard to the threat of suicide, a psychiatrist has a difficulty in identifying whether a person is suicidal. There is another hurdle if it is to be deemed that a woman is suicidal because a woman is pregnant, and in an opinion of whether an abortion would make the case better or worse. This is not good medicine but rather signing away the life of...
- Seanad: Order of Business (27 Nov 2012)
Rónán Mullen: I thank Senator Norris for raising the issue. I note the Cathaoirleach did not interrupt Senator Bacik when she made the points she was entitled to make.
- Seanad: Order of Business (27 Nov 2012)
Rónán Mullen: I was doing no more than responding to those comments, expressing my deep concern that the Government would be allowed, on the back of a very tragic case, to be manipulated into a swift decision that has nothing to do with good medicine and could open the door to abortion on demand.
- Seanad: Order of Business (27 Nov 2012)
Rónán Mullen: In fact, it will.
- Seanad: Order of Business (27 Nov 2012)
Rónán Mullen: Yes. In considering what the expert group had to say, it does not seem to have made any reference to the possibility of consulting the people. On a matter this grave, it would seem that is a very significant omission. That must also be discussed.
- Seanad: Order of Business (4 Dec 2012)
Rónán Mullen: In due course we might also have to debate the difference between south Dublin and the rest of the country on other issues.
- Seanad: Order of Business (4 Dec 2012)
Rónán Mullen: Reports of disquiet and disunity within the Government aside, I welcome the report that social protection rates, as part of the ongoing discussions between the parties in government, have been ringfenced. There is great fear among the working poor about a property tax which some might find unmanageable. There is also fear about the impact of further cuts in social protection rates. It is...
