Róisín Shortall: Yes, about the clinical director-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Spinal Surgery Issues at Children's University Hospital Temple Street: Children's Health Ireland (28 Sep 2023)
Róisín Shortall: Okay. A short while ago Dr. Goldman said that, following that review, he sent out directions to staff. He also said "we have a tighter governance process now." That is what he said. The implication of that is that there was a looser governance process prior to the external review. Would Dr. Goldman accept that?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Spinal Surgery Issues at Children's University Hospital Temple Street: Children's Health Ireland (28 Sep 2023)
Róisín Shortall: There were 50 recommendations in the external review. Reading between the lines, they were pretty damning in terms of governance and management. Dr. Goldman now says he is moving to get tighter governance. The implication of that is that there was looser governance, that goes without saying.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Spinal Surgery Issues at Children's University Hospital Temple Street: Children's Health Ireland (28 Sep 2023)
Róisín Shortall: Fine, I hear what Dr. Goldman is saying. Is it the case that the consultant at the centre of this actually requested and was very much in favour of an external review?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Spinal Surgery Issues at Children's University Hospital Temple Street: Children's Health Ireland (28 Sep 2023)
Róisín Shortall: So he wanted an external review, is that the case?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Spinal Surgery Issues at Children's University Hospital Temple Street: Children's Health Ireland (28 Sep 2023)
Róisín Shortall: I would like to ask Ms Kelly about data collection. Did she know that Temple Street had no data collection resource in relation to surgical outcomes?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Spinal Surgery Issues at Children's University Hospital Temple Street: Children's Health Ireland (28 Sep 2023)
Róisín Shortall: We have heard about this very unfortunate case with 33 returns to theatre. Of those 33 returns, roughly what was their breakdown in terms of wound washing, bowel management and other things that would not involve serious surgery?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Spinal Surgery Issues at Children's University Hospital Temple Street: Children's Health Ireland (28 Sep 2023)
Róisín Shortall: That is not the question I asked.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Spinal Surgery Issues at Children's University Hospital Temple Street: Children's Health Ireland (28 Sep 2023)
Róisín Shortall: Okay, so particularly in the case of children with co-morbidities many other procedures such as wash outs would be required. Is that right?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Spinal Surgery Issues at Children's University Hospital Temple Street: Children's Health Ireland (28 Sep 2023)
Róisín Shortall: That would be expected.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Spinal Surgery Issues at Children's University Hospital Temple Street: Children's Health Ireland (28 Sep 2023)
Róisín Shortall: Okay, I thank the witnesses.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Spinal Surgery Issues at Children's University Hospital Temple Street: Children's Health Ireland (28 Sep 2023)
Róisín Shortall: Is that a new arrangement?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Spinal Surgery Issues at Children's University Hospital Temple Street: Children's Health Ireland (28 Sep 2023)
Róisín Shortall: May I remind the witnesses of the commitment to provide data on the international norms in terms of children in this category, as well as an update on the progress being made on the external review recommendations?
- Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Housing Provision (5 Oct 2023)
Róisín Shortall: 81. To ask the Minister for Finance the number of vacant properties upon which the vacant homes tax will be levied; the source of this calculation; his plans, if any, to expand the cohort of liable properties; the expected revenue from this new tax; the steps the Revenue Commissioners will take in the event of a non-payment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. - Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Housing Provision (5 Oct 2023)
Róisín Shortall: Anybody with their eyes open knows there is a considerable number of vacant homes around the country. It makes no sense whatsoever to leave these homes vacant in the context of a housing crisis. Nor does it makes any sense from a climate perspective. We know that most other countries have long had regulations in place to address this waste. The Government has been very slow to address it,...
- Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Housing Provision (5 Oct 2023)
Róisín Shortall: A very conservative approach is being taken to this. Revenue has constantly denied the existence of an issue. All of us as public representatives from our experience in canvassing or delivering leaflets see it, especially at election time when calling to a clearly vacant house and there is nobody on the register. It is a significant problem, yet there seems to be no great appetite to...
- Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Housing Provision (5 Oct 2023)
Róisín Shortall: Absolutely, but I do not like the way it is shaping up because it does not come across like there is a serious effort by Revenue or Government to force this issue and bring the houses back into use. That is the purpose of it. The manual concentrates overly on exemptions. How does Revenue verify applications for exemptions? Will the Minister provide information on that? It is not clear...
- Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Housing Provision (5 Oct 2023)
Róisín Shortall: That is less than a sixth of what the census is telling us. You are not serious about this unless you do a public campaign on it. You are kind of talking to yourselves.
- Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Housing Provision (5 Oct 2023)
Róisín Shortall: It does not sound serious.
- Written Answers — Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht: Raidió Teilifís Éireann (4 Oct 2023)
Róisín Shortall: 127. To ask the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht further to Parliamentary Question No. 415 of 13 July 2023, if, in relation to RTÉ pensioners, many of whom are surviving on low to middle incomes, she intends to sanction RTÉ to release funds so that the pensions' trustees can pay out the pension increase, which has been frozen for a number of years; and if she will...
