Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Organic Farming: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Jun 2021)

Matt Carthy: This is one of the more disappointing hearings I have attended in my time as a member of the committee. The reason is that organics have to form a big part of the solution to the challenges facing Irish farming. We know that as a country we cannot compete on price. If we try to pursue a policy that is based on quantity and price, we will always be beaten by countries such as Brazil, so we...

If all the remaining applicants are successful, what will that mean in percentage terms for an increase in organic land?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Organic Farming: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Jun 2021)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Organic Farming: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Jun 2021)

Matt Carthy: Maybe the Dáil record should be corrected then. In response to a parliamentary question on 28 April, the Minister indicated €5 million was allocated to this. Senator Daly said he did not want to be critical, but I do. If organic farming is done right, it can deliver for farmers, consumers and the environment. It is not good enough simply to say these are legacy issues. The...

Ban on Rent Increases Bill 2021: Second Stage [Private Members] (6 Jul 2021)

Matt Carthy: When the Tánaiste accused Sinn Féin of promising free housing, he exposed the Fianna Fáil-Fine Gael ideology-driven agenda that lit the embers of the housing crisis and fanned the sparks, leading to the catastrophe we witness in every community in this State. This catastrophe means that most young people cannot even dream of ever owning their own home. I grew up in a council...

Post Office Network: Motion [Private Members] (7 Jul 2021)

Matt Carthy: I commend the Regional Group on bringing this motion before the House once again. I also commend the amendment Deputy O'Rourke has moved. It is where Government, business, communities and real living...
