Water Sector Reforms: Motion (Resumed) (19 Nov 2014)

Mick Wallace: In Dublin we would not be looking for individual leaks. The cast-iron pipes have been corroded and the four-inch pipes have a bore of two inches left, as the rest consists of corrosion. We would not be fixing leaks here and there but rather replacing pipes. It is not a matter of looking for leaks and one does not need a meter to know where are the pipes I have mentioned. These pipes were...

Water Sector Reforms: Motion (Resumed) (19 Nov 2014)

Mick Wallace: We know where they are but like its predecessor, this Government has done nothing about fixing those pipes. It is madness.

Water Sector Reforms: Motion (Resumed) (19 Nov 2014)

Mick Wallace: We have been contacted by concerned superintendents who have argued that the manner in which gardaí have been sent in many cases to police protests is unfair. These gardaí could not get overtime for the past number of years in order to look after normal work but when the water charges came along, any amount of people can be allowed to work in order to police these protests. These...

Water Sector Reforms: Motion (Resumed) (19 Nov 2014)

Mick Wallace: I mentioned yesterday that the selection of the new chairperson for the policing authority is not an independent selection, and the manner in which the selection process took place leaves much be desired. If we are not going to get an independent police authority, we would be better without a police authority. The Government is about to choose a new Garda Commissioner.

Water Sector Reforms: Motion (Resumed) (19 Nov 2014)

Mick Wallace: Given the latest Garda Inspectorate report, if the Government picks somebody from the existing hierarchy and continues its politicisation of the Garda Síochána in Ireland, nothing will change in how policing is done.

Water Sector Reforms: Motion (Resumed) (19 Nov 2014)

Mick Wallace: The former Garda Commissioner might be gone, as well as the former Minister, Deputy Shatter, but nothing else will have changed. The Government is not demonstrating any appetite for real reform of the Garda Síochána.

Written Answers — Department of Health: Hospital Consultants Recruitment (19 Nov 2014)

Mick Wallace: 139. To ask the Minister for Health if he will provide a progress update on the recruitment process for a consultant dermatologist in Waterford Regional Hospital; when the promised replacement dermatology clinics will be operational in South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital in County Cork in order to deal with patients from the south-east region; and if he will make a statement on the...

Written Answers — Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources: Electricity Generation (19 Nov 2014)

Mick Wallace: 178. To ask the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources the reasoning behind the closure of the Electric Ireland micro-generation pilot scheme to new customers from 31 December 2014, particularly in view of the fact that micro-generation is more affordable and has a much lower carbon footprint than traditional forms of energy generation; and if he will make a statement on...

Mick Wallace: 117. To ask the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation the timeframe regarding the introduction of the transatlantic trade and investment partnership; when it is likely to be discussed in Dáil Éireann; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [44363/14]

Other Questions: Election Monitoring Missions (26 Nov 2014)

Mick Wallace: In 1948 the Jews expelled, massacred, destroyed, raped and generally behaved like any other colonialist movement operating in the Middle East and Africa since the beginning of the 19th century.

Other Questions: Election Monitoring Missions (26 Nov 2014)

Mick Wallace: As a result of that campaign, 500 Palestinian villages and 11 urban neighbourhoods were destroyed.

Other Questions: Foreign Conflicts (26 Nov 2014)

Mick Wallace: 10. To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade if he will follow the Swedish example and recognise the state of Palestine; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [44963/14]

Other Questions: Foreign Conflicts (26 Nov 2014)

Mick Wallace: I thank the Minister and Leas-Cheann Comhairle. As I was saying, as a result of that campaign, 500 Palestinian villages and 11 urban neighbourhoods were destroyed, 700,000 Palestinians were expelled and several thousand were massacred. It was a genocide at the time. What is happening today is not very different. The Minister said he has not ruled out recognition by Ireland of the...

Leaders' Questions (26 Nov 2014)

Mick Wallace: For more than two years we were confronted with seemingly endless scandals of Garda malpractice. For a year and a half we heard total Government denials. Then a few heads rolled and we were given promises of reform and loads of reports. The Garda Síochána Inspectorate report insisted that a complete radical cultural change was required but the Government has decided to appoint an...

Leaders' Questions (26 Nov 2014)

Mick Wallace: Legislation has been delayed and reform has been promised but not delivered. It is the same policing policy but a different PR policy which has worked well for the Government. The appointment of the Garda Commissioner and in particular the appointment of the chair of the independent policing authority has been shrouded in secrecy rather than transparency.

Leaders' Questions (26 Nov 2014)

Mick Wallace: The Government has bypassed proper protocol.
