Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest (No. 2) Bill 2010: Second Stage (9 Dec 2010)

Martin Ferris: I thank Deputy Sherlock and the Labour Party for allowing me an opportunity to speak on this issue. Of all the cynical, nasty things thrown at ordinary people as part of this budget and the so-called road to recovery, cutting the minimum wage surely stands out as the most malicious. It is malicious in so far as people who are dependent on the minimum wage to make ends meet will find their...

Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest (No. 2) Bill 2010: Committee and Remaining Stages (10 Dec 2010)

Martin Ferris: I fully support the spirit and the principle of Deputy Penrose's amendment regarding those on the minimum wage. Many of the arguments being made by Deputy Burton and the Labour Party, and by Deputy Gogarty, concern the most vulnerable and the weakest section of our society who are effectively being crucified by this Government. If there is a flaw in the amendment it is that it is trying to...

Martin Ferris: Society can be judged only on the way-----

Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest (No. 2) Bill 2010: Committee and Remaining Stages (10 Dec 2010)

Martin Ferris: -----it treats the most vulnerable in society. A coalition Government such as we have that is prepared to attack the most vulnerable, irrespective of what one says, is a Government without a social conscience. I know Fianna Fáil supporters, canvassers and so forth and they have always prided themselves on the fact that they have a social conscience but the leadership of Fianna Fáil does...

Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest (No. 2) Bill 2010: Committee and Remaining Stages (10 Dec 2010)

Martin Ferris: Effectively, the Government is expanding the working poor. The working poor is becoming the fastest growing sector in society and in the economy. The Government has no moral mandate to do what it is doing. It is disgraceful. I do not know how the Ministers of State can sit there and try to justify it. I look to Deputy Gogarty, who has a conscience. He should be guided by his conscience.

Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest (No. 2) Bill 2010: Committee and Remaining Stages (10 Dec 2010)

Martin Ferris: Do not allow this. Deputy Gogarty should be guided by his conscience.

Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest (No. 2) Bill 2010: Committee and Remaining Stages (10 Dec 2010)

Martin Ferris: If Deputy Gogarty is coming in here and is prepared to take the Whip to penalise the poor and those on the minimum wage, he should be guided by his conscience-----

Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest (No. 2) Bill 2010: Committee and Remaining Stages (10 Dec 2010)

Martin Ferris: -----and be a man of principle.

Order of Business (14 Dec 2010)

Requests to move Adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 32 (15 Dec 2010)

Martin Ferris: I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 32 to discuss the following matter, namely, that workers on the N7 motorway in County Offaly have been forced to take industrial action because they have not been paid since 1 November owing to their immediate employer not having been paid by a major contractor and the need for intervention to ensure that the moneys concerned are paid...
