- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: European Union Enlargement: Discussion (25 Apr 2018)
Gerard Craughwell: Our witness is very welcome and I thank him for a comprehensive overview of where things are. I have always had some concern about expansion of the European project. One is acutely aware of the old economic diminishing marginal returns to expansion, and the larger we get, the more precarious things become. Clearly, there is great benefit in expanding the project and taking in other...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: European Union Enlargement: Discussion (25 Apr 2018)
Gerard Craughwell: I thank the ambassadors for their presentations. I will deal with Albania first. The steps taken in curbing corruption and putting judicial processes in place are to be commended. Albania's abundance of natural resources is incredible and probably explains the unemployment rate. There is tremendous capacity to build a very strong economy, which would be more than welcome in the European...
- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Driver Test Centres (26 Apr 2018)
Gerard Craughwell: I will endeavour to get through it as quickly as I can. I thank the Minister, Deputy Ross, for coming to the House this morning to take this Commencement matter. Many Ministers send a Minister of State in their stead, so I thank the Minister for his attendance. Many driving tests for heavy good vehicles, HGVs, and buses scheduled to take place in the past two weeks at the Westside test...
- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Driver Test Centres (26 Apr 2018)
Gerard Craughwell: I thank the Minister for that positive response. There are a number of locations the OPW could have a look at, including the industrial estate in Galway, the Údarás na Gaeltachta site and the old Tuam sugar factory. They are three sites off the top of my head that it may be possible to use. I thank the Minister for his time and for agreeing to support this.

- Seanad: Order of Business (1 May 2018)
Gerard Craughwell: I join colleagues in welcoming two fine Irishmen to the Seanad, namely, Senators Anthony Lawlor and Ian Marshall. They are more than welcome. I am sure we will hear from them and do battle over the coming months. The one thing I would say to them is, "Enjoy it." We have heard many Members today speak of Vicky Phelan. There are few words that can describe what must have gone through that...
- Seanad: Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Statements (1 May 2018)
Gerard Craughwell: I will not delay the Minister, other than to say that every time I see him, the Taoiseach and the Minister of State on television, my confidence that they know what they are about grows. The job they are doing is exceptional. They are representing this country well and anywhere we travel we hear of the work they have done. However, it is not the members of the Government that bother me....
- Seanad: Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Statements (1 May 2018)

- Seanad: Defence Forces: Statements (1 May 2018)
Gerard Craughwell: I thank the Minister of State and the Leader for facilitating this debate at my request. As the Minister of State knows, the first official review of the 2015 White Paper on Defence is due to commence in July. Even though the ten-year White Paper is only into its third year, the world is certainly a very changed place. Brexit, the uncertainty of a hard border, increased international...

Gerard Craughwell: Is that agreed? Agreed.
- Seanad: Order of Business (3 May 2018)
Gerard Craughwell: Recent history should teach those of us in political life some lessons about taking responsibility for the actions of others. Ministers have come under pressure in recent times on a number of high-profile cases such as the blood transfusion anti-D cases, which affected 100,000 women. In 1991 the blood transfusion board was alerted by British hospitals that a batch of anti-D produced in 1977...
- Seanad: Order of Business (3 May 2018)
Gerard Craughwell: I wonder how quick the action would have been if the same slip-ups had occurred in respect of prostate tests. I ask for an open and honest debate on governance within the public sector.
