Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Irish Prisoners Abroad: Motion (1 Apr 2015)

Mark Daly: In the case of the Canadian and Australian nationals, it was the Prime Ministers' telephone calls and meetings with President el-Sisi that secured their release, nothing else. There was nothing from their departments of foreign affairs or their Ministers for foreign affairs. It was the direct intervention that worked. We welcome all the work the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the officials...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade: Irish Prisoners Abroad: Motion (1 Apr 2015)

Mark Daly: I propose an amendment to the Order of Business that No. 68, motion 15 be taken today. Obviously, in terms of those paying the pension levy, these people will not receive a pension but it might be something the Government...

Seanad: Public Services and Procurement (Social Value) Bill 2015: Second Stage (22 Apr 2015)

Mark Daly: I compliment my colleague, Deputy Darragh O'Brien, on introducing this important Bill. Departments frequently tell us that a tender was awarded for value for money reasons. Value for money is not the only issue at stake in the awarding of public contracts. As previous speakers noted, we often find that contracts for simple items are awarded to foreign companies. It beggars belief that the...
