- Seanad: Enforcement of Court Orders (Amendment) Bill 2009: Second Stage (7 Jul 2009)
Maurice Cummins: On a point of order, the Leader of the House gave an undertaking that there would be no guillotining of any Bill. If people are not allowed to speak, I would deem that as guillotining the Bill. We have people who wish to speak and the Leader gave an undertaking earlier today that there would not be a guillotine on any Bill in this House. This is effectively guillotining the Bill.
- Seanad: Enforcement of Court Orders (Amendment) Bill 2009: Second Stage (7 Jul 2009)
Maurice Cummins: It shows how ludicrous the ordering of business in the House is.
- Seanad: Enforcement of Court Orders (Amendment) Bill 2009: Second Stage (7 Jul 2009)
Maurice Cummins: It is not agreed. We point out to the Leader what he said about guillotining debate on Bills. The guillotining of the debate has happened already because some speakers were not allowed to contribute to the debate on Second Stage. In effect, the Leader has guillotined the debate on this Bill. He should not say that he has not guillotined the debate on Bills in the past.
- Seanad: Enforcement of Court Orders (Amendment) Bill 2009: Committee Stage (7 Jul 2009)

- Seanad: Enforcement of Court Orders (Amendment) Bill 2009: Committee Stage (7 Jul 2009)
Maurice Cummins: I could not agree more with Senator O'Donovan. He has made quite a valid point in saying we have insufficient time to debate such legislation. He speaks about putting some clear water between Second Stage and Committee Stage, while Senator White earlier asked for breathing space. This is exactly what we need in discussing this Bill and I cannot understand why the Leader has adopted a...
- Seanad: Oireachtas (Allowances to Members) and Ministerial and Parliamentary Offices Bill 2009: Second Stage (7 Jul 2009)
Maurice Cummins: The Minister stated that Government members reduced their salaries by 10% last October and that Ministers of State made a similar reduction. Was that 10% of the total salary of Ministers and Ministers of State, including their Dáil salary, or was it 10% of only the ministerial part of it? I understand that the 10% reduction applies only to the ministerial part of their salary and it is...

- Seanad: Land and Conveyancing Law Reform Bill 2008 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil]: Report and Final Stages. (9 Jul 2009)

- Seanad: Twenty-Eighth Amendment of the Constitution (Treaty of Lisbon) Bill 2009: Second Stage (9 Jul 2009)
Maurice Cummins: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Kelleher, and the Bill that is before the House to provide for a new referendum on the Lisbon treaty. Like Senator à Murchú I have listened to the full debate. We have had some excellent contributions on the Bill. The Lisbon treaty is an important issue for Europe but it is vital for this country. A maxim taught to medical students is sometimes...
- Seanad: Order of Business (10 Jul 2009)
Maurice Cummins: As we all know, Waterford Crystal was allowed to close recently with the loss of more than 600 jobs. When the company was sold it was decided that the showrooms and the tourism part of the business would be kept open. More than â¬100,000 has been spent on refurbishing the showrooms. I understand that on Tuesday last CIE Tours management sent an e-mail to the company informing it that CIE...

- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jul 2009)
Maurice Cummins: When the former Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform introduced the Criminal Justice Bill 2006 in this House he spent several weeks dealing with it and was here for the taking of all Stages. We spent weeks dealing with Committee and Report Stages of that Bill. The Minister accepted several amendments to the Bill from this side of the House. That is in marked contrast to what is...

Maurice Cummins: The Minister should not oblige the House to pass the Bill today.
- Seanad: Criminal Justice (Amendment) Bill 2009: Second Stage (14 Jul 2009)
Maurice Cummins: I am on the record of this House as having called, on at least two occasions, for gangland criminals to be treated the same as terrorists. Jury intimidation, interference and threats, and the killing of fellow gangland figures - but especially innocent victims such as Roy Collins and Wayne Doherty - constitute an attack on the very fabric of this State. Whether we like it or not, criminal...
