Other Questions: Wild Atlantic Way Project (1 Oct 2014)

Sandra McLellan: While I welcome the new initiative, I still believe my constituency of East Cork is missing out on what would be a much needed boost to the local economy. My home town of Youghal is situated at the mouth of the River Blackwater where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is a renowned tourist town which is steeped in history. Just half an hour away are the Jameson Distillery in Midleton, Cobh,...

Other Questions: Wild Atlantic Way Project (1 Oct 2014)

Sandra McLellan: I disagree with the Minister of State. East Cork should have been included in the Wild Atlantic Way. We have a most beautiful coastline and so much to offer in terms of culture and tourism. In times of economic hardship that have affected many small rural businesses it would be a wonderful contribution to have a tourist attraction benefiting as many counties and areas as possible. There...

Direct Provision for Asylum Seekers: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (1 Oct 2014)

Sandra McLellan: I wish to share time with Deputy McDonald. Direct provision is a blight on this State. The notion that the needs of people at their most vulnerable could be met by accommodating them in cramped, unsafe and crowded conditions is a disgrace. Asylum seekers are forced to live on €19.10 per week while awaiting a decision by the State on whether they are allowed to stay in Ireland....

Public Health (Standardised Packaging of Tobacco) Bill 2014 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed) (2 Oct 2014)

Sandra McLellan: Sinn Féin supports this Bill as one more important step towards combatting the harmful and devastating effects of tobacco smoking. It brings into focus once again the damage tobacco smoking does to public health and allows us to highlight the physical and emotional pain caused by the tobacco industry. The ongoing campaign to eradicate tobacco smoking in this State is to be highly...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Concussion in Sport: Discussion (2 Oct 2014)

Sandra McLellan: I take this opportunity to welcome the witnesses and to thank them for their highly comprehensive presentations. This was not something about which I had thought in depth but having spent several hours going over the presentations last night, they certainly provided food for thought. They made me think about many issues pertaining to concussion about which I had never really thought...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Concussion in Sport: Discussion (2 Oct 2014)

Sandra McLellan: We have a copy of it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children: Concussion in Sport: Discussion (2 Oct 2014)

Sandra McLellan: I thank the witnesses for their informative presentations, which have demonstrated that we need clear protocols to adhere to best practice. I was struck by the fact that we have no national database for concussion. How would this information be collated and who would be in charge of it? Most sporting activity in Ireland is not supported by medical or paramedic expertise. How can we change...

However, I believe the Minister has already outlined the position.
