Mary White: I support Senator Fitzgerald's call for a debate on the equality issue. Today is International Human Rights Day and I will focus on the lack of human rights for older people. Over 10% of our population are over 65 and that figure is set to double in the next 30 years. There are approximately 500,000 people aged over 65 in Ireland. In my document entitled A New Approach to Aging and Ageism...

Mary White: Following discussions, The Irish Times and I have agreed to work together to launch its active life award on a North-South basis. This will highlight the fight against ageism and promote justice for and the human rights of older people on the island.

Mary White: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Hoctor, to the House and compliment her on the great work she is doing as Minister of State with responsibility for older people. Everyone in Leinster House was deeply affected by the reaction of older people in Ireland to the proposed abolition of the medical card. The response of older people was like a tsunami overwhelming the country. As Fianna...
- Seanad: Health Bill 2008: Second Stage (12 Dec 2008)
Mary White: I will be pushing also for the vaccination for young girls aged 12 to be introduced as soon as the economy is right and for free screening for cervical cancer for women over 60. Sexism is not acceptable, racism is not acceptable but ageism is still acceptable. Until one starts studying it, one does not realise how ageist society is. There is one matter we can be sure about. Please God, we...

- Seanad: Anglo Irish Bank Corporation Bill 2009: Second Stage (20 Jan 2009)
Mary White: I wish to share my time with Senator Terry Leyden, with the permission of the House. I welcome the Minister's speech. It is important that the Irish people get the message to the effect that nationalising Anglo Irish Bank is not just a question of saving the bank, but the country's banking system. In the past few weeks the Financial Times has made us look pathetic novices as regards the...
- Seanad: Anglo Irish Bank Corporation Bill 2009: Second Stage (20 Jan 2009)
Mary White: I believe there has been a certain amount of jealousy in the Financial Times over the years at the success of the Celtic tiger and that it is delighting in the trouble we are in. However, we have a responsibility as regards transparency that is critical for the future. I cannot understand that a director can avail of loans and not let his or her board know, and that the law is not being...
- Seanad: Order of Business (27 Jan 2009)
Mary White: I refer to the matter of the incest case in Roscommon raised by Senator O'Toole. The facts about the Roscommon abuse case must be established before action is taken. We need an investigation to determine how this most serious family abuse could continue for so long. I do not believe the Health Service Executive should be involved in that investigation.
