Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Cancer Treatment Services: Discussion (1 Feb 2023)

Róisín Shortall: Obviously, many of those symptoms could relate to cancer. Could I ask about radiation therapists? We are told there is a 30% vacancy rate across the service. Is that the case? Is anything being done to ensure we address that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Cancer Treatment Services: Discussion (1 Feb 2023)

Róisín Shortall: I am just asking about what is being done to address it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Cancer Treatment Services: Discussion (1 Feb 2023)

Róisín Shortall: I am sorry but I am out of time. What is actually being done about that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Cancer Treatment Services: Discussion (1 Feb 2023)

Róisín Shortall: No, for the cancer programme and the NCRI's report only relates to the period up to 2018. Is this not an ongoing concern or issue that the HSE addresses within its programme? Surely the poor rates of uptake of screening is a priority for the delegation.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Cancer Treatment Services: Discussion (1 Feb 2023)

Róisín Shortall: Sure. That is in respect of breast cancer, which is very welcome, but it would be good to know about other cancers.

Mortgage Interest Relief Scheme: Motion [Private Members] (8 Feb 2023)

Róisín Shortall: It is timely to have this debate. The Sinn Féin motion notes all the different difficulties associated with the high interest rates in this country and the burden that places on ordinary families trying to provide homes for themselves. That is all very worthwhile and there are a lot of questions to be asked about why our interest rates are so out of line with other European countries....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Welfare and Safety of Workers and Patients in Public Health Service: Discussion (8 Feb 2023)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Welfare and Safety of Workers and Patients in Public Health Service: Discussion (8 Feb 2023)

Róisín Shortall: Is it the general experience that security personnel would be agency staff who come and go or are they HSE or hospital staff?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Welfare and Safety of Workers and Patients in Public Health Service: Discussion (8 Feb 2023)

Róisín Shortall: Points have been made about the role of the HSE and the need for it to have a separate health sector division, and for that to be funded. Does anybody know where that proposal stands? Is it a live proposal? Is it being pursued?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Welfare and Safety of Workers and Patients in Public Health Service: Discussion (8 Feb 2023)

Róisín Shortall: Presumably, it will only do it if it is funded by the State.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Welfare and Safety of Workers and Patients in Public Health Service: Discussion (8 Feb 2023)

Róisín Shortall: How many?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Welfare and Safety of Workers and Patients in Public Health Service: Discussion (8 Feb 2023)

Róisín Shortall: Is it the view of the INMO that this is a capacity issue, or is it down to a lack of priority?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Welfare and Safety of Workers and Patients in Public Health Service: Discussion (8 Feb 2023)

Róisín Shortall: That is a specific issue which the committee needs to pursue actively. Mr. Figgis made a point about staff. He provided the data on the incidence of assault. He referred to the unequal treatment of benefits affording to support workers by their employer even if they are assaulted in the same incident as other grades of staff. Will he explain that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Welfare and Safety of Workers and Patients in Public Health Service: Discussion (8 Feb 2023)

Róisín Shortall: That is clearly very unfair. I thank Mr. Figgis for the explanation. I turn to the issue of bullying. This is an additional pressure on staff, who sometimes deal with aggressive patients and people who are with them. There is all the stress associated with working in unsafe environments, with understaffing and so on. Then there is the issue of how staff are treated by management,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Welfare and Safety of Workers and Patients in Public Health Service: Discussion (8 Feb 2023)

Róisín Shortall: Do the witnesses know whether there are data available on this? The SIPTU representatives might have something.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Welfare and Safety of Workers and Patients in Public Health Service: Discussion (8 Feb 2023)

Róisín Shortall: I thank Mr. Figgis. I ask for a brief response on this point from the INMO representatives.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Welfare and Safety of Workers and Patients in Public Health Service: Discussion (8 Feb 2023)

Róisín Shortall: Is Mr. Murphy saying training on this should be mandatory for managers?
