Jerry Buttimer: What does that actually mean in real terms?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Recent Issues Concerning Aer Lingus Flight Booking and Check-in Services: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: We discussed the operations of Emerald Airlines as Aer Lingus Regional. To me it would make eminent sense to use this service for short-haul flights from Cork to the UK and cities such as Belfast.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Recent Issues Concerning Aer Lingus Flight Booking and Check-in Services: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: Yes, at this point. I thank the witnesses genuinely for coming here to talk to us and to address us. I just ask that Aer Lingus's PR improve. It hurts us all when we see the reputational damage inflicted for a variety of reasons. None of us wants to see conflict or discommoded passengers. I ask Aer Lingus to improve its PR. On any of the flights I have had, Aer Lingus's staff have...

Seanad: School Transport: Statements (26 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: Exactly.

Seanad: School Transport: Statements (26 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I welcome the Minister and thank her for being here tonight. Many of us deal with parents. Senators Garvey and Lombard eloquently touched upon the emotions involved. The raw emotion of students and their families impacts on us as well. I am dealing with the case of 15 students from Ballinhassig who are travelling to Kinsale without a bus ticket. The bottom line relates to the human emotion...

Seanad: Social Welfare (Surviving Cohabitant’s Pension) Bill 2021: Second Stage (26 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I welcome Mr. O'Meara and his family to the House and thank them for being here. I commend Senator Wall and the Labour Party on this Bill. I apologise that I missed the briefing by Treoir but I commend it on its great work from which we have all benefited as Members of the House. What was said in the Minister's statement is very true. This debate is about human loss and about grieving....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I welcome the witnesses and thank them for their interesting testimony. I will ask an overarching question. I am near the end of the list of speakers, so everything that I wanted to ask has already been asked, but what three points regarding school transport should we as a committee take away from today and bring to the Department of Transport or the Department of Education?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: Whichever.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: Will Mr. Conway elaborate on that point?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: Mr. Feargal Barton, one of the Coach Tourism and Transport Council's representatives, was recently quoted as saying that the issue of insurance for young drivers was a particular barrier. Mr. Conway has just mentioned the issue about needing to be 21 years of age. Would he include that as part of the suite of requests?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: The council's representatives have spoken about an issue with regard to training drivers and young people. Is the cost of obtaining a licence prohibitive? Has the council spoken to the Minister, Deputy Harris, or the Minister of State, Deputy Niall Collins, who are in charge of the Department responsible for higher education and apprenticeships?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: In respect of the funding piece, what would the cost to the State be? I apologise because I know Mr. Conway may have mentioned it already. How serious is the issue of pay and conditions with regard to retention and recruitment of drivers?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: Yes. If the council's wish list were enacted by the Government, what would the import of that cost be to the State?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: Yes. I again apologise, because I had another meeting in parallel with this, but the issue of the excise reduction on petrol and diesel was referred to on page 2 of the council's presentation. Will Mr. Conway elaborate on that? Other members may have asked him because he said he was keen to discuss it further with them. I am not sure whether he did so but, if he did not I ask that he...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Coach Sector: Discussion (19 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I have a ridiculously stupid question. Are we light years away from operation of electric buses or a sustainable model in Mr. Conway's industry? I ask out of curiosity.

Jerry Buttimer: I thank Mr. David O'Brien of Cork Coach Hire who has been in constant contact with me for his advocacy on behalf of the industry. I also thank the representatives for being here today and for what they are doing. I apologise for being in and out. The evidence we have had today is important and the representatives provide a considerable service both to the State and many sporting and...
