Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I apologise for interrupting. I am fully conscious of the roadworks taking place at the Dunkettle interchange and I appreciate their significance. I understand the need for absolute vigilance and a slow-down mentality given the enormity of the works there. As we drive out of the tunnel heading towards the western suburbs of the city we have a 60 km/h construction speed limit. There is no...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I am very conscious that if we had fatal collisions, serious collisions and minor collisions at any of the places or the roads I have mentioned there would be a real need but I do not see it as a case in the two examples I have given. The 61 new safety camera zones came into operation at the end of July. We now have 1,373 speed cameras. Has data research been done on their exact locations?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: Yes. I am very much in favour of that, to be fair to Mr. Waide and the RSA. It is important that we modify behaviour on our roads. Mr. Waide is correct that there is an increase, which is unacceptable. One fatality or one accident is a family member, friend or work colleague. We should always remember it is human lives and never condone bad driving behaviour. My comments, first and...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: Do not think for one second that I am in favour of compromising road safety or reducing speed limits; I am not. I thoroughly support what the RSA is doing. Its campaign on TV and radio before the summer holidays was very strong and those striking visible images are ones we need to talk to people about more. In a modern world where our young drivers are more frequently on TikTok, other...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I should put this in the context of a number of locations and I will give two examples. One of these is the tunnel in Cork and the N40 heading eastbound towards the Dublin road. Is Mr. Waide familiar with this?

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (25 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I welcome the decision made regarding the pay claim for the staff of the Houses of the Oireachtas. I commend the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Deputy Michael McGrath, on signing the order in this regard. I commend all involved in the initiative and the effort to ensure the staff of the Houses of the Oireachtas receive proper and just pay. I compliment, in particular, my own...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I do not know if you should be saying that.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: We expect greater things.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: Will the Vice-Chair explain that?

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (26 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: I welcome the students from Christ the King and, in particular, the teachers here. Ms O'Leary is the co-ordinator and she is very welcome. She comes with very special privileges. A former pupil of mine told me that his daughter was here today. They are from a great club called Na Piarsaigh. I will not call her out because she might be embarrassed but she knows who she is. They are very...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Recent Issues Concerning Aer Lingus Flight Booking and Check-in Services: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: In the past they were very well supported.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Recent Issues Concerning Aer Lingus Flight Booking and Check-in Services: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: It still does not add up to supporting the comment made earlier in the context of the national aviation review and the importance of regional airports. I do not see them as being considered important. Mr. Moriarty is far more competent and knowledgeable than I am but as a lay person who is a public representative from Cork and the Munster region, I have to question Aer Lingus's commitment...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Recent Issues Concerning Aer Lingus Flight Booking and Check-in Services: Discussion (5 Oct 2022)

Jerry Buttimer: If John Murphy or Mary Murphy is sitting at home on the phone looking to fly out of Cork or Shannon the options are diminishing every week.
