Seanad: Hospital Services. (29 Nov 2006)

Ulick Burke: Following the publication several weeks ago of a Comhairle na nOspidéal report on neurosurgical services, it became clear there was to be the continuation of only two units in the country. Galway was not to have a unit. The report claimed the provision of a third unit would impinge on the viability of the other two. However, the report makes the best case possible in support of the...

Seanad: Hospital Services. (29 Nov 2006)

Ulick Burke: With regard to transport, the helipad and telemedicine, it will take €11.5 million in capital costs to provide helicopter transport and €4.1 million running costs per annum, making a total of more than €15 million. That sum would resource a three consultant unit in Galway. The HSE is part of a situation in which the west does not count. The composition of that committee was biased in...

Seanad: Hospital Services. (29 Nov 2006)

Ulick Burke: The committee ignored the terms of reference it was given.

Seanad: Further and Adult Education: Statements (30 Nov 2006)

Ulick Burke: I welcome this debate. This is probably the Minister of State's last official visit to this House in her ministerial capacity. I acknowledge her commitment to her areas of responsibility in the Department, particularly school transport. That sector went through a difficult time in the past couple of years as a result of the tragedies that occurred. However, there has been a fruitful...

Ulick Burke: Perhaps the Senator might repeat that.

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2006: Committee and Remaining Stages (5 Dec 2006)

Ulick Burke: Does the Senator intend to press amendment No. 6?

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2006)

Ulick Burke: We heard this morning the opinions of Government Senators about the effects on farmers of the proposed water charges in local authority areas throughout the country. Previous speakers failed to recognise that the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government has imposed cutbacks on local authorities, as can be clearly seen from the recent Estimates. As a result of those...

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2006)

Ulick Burke: The Senators in question are behaving as if they were in opposition. In local authorities in which the Government parties are in the minority, their councillors are blaming the councillors who are in power. In local authorities in which the Government parties are in charge, their councillors are blaming the county managers. They cannot have it both ways.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2006)

Ulick Burke: The local authorities should ask the Minister, Deputy Roche, to compensate them for the shortfall in the Estimates——

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2006)

Ulick Burke: —— and to provide for equality in respect of water charges. The probability is that water charges will increase further during the coming year if the Minister does not provide adequate resources to county councils. Senator Leyden, Senator Scanlon and others cried crocodile tears for the people who met in Roscommon the other day——

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2006)

Ulick Burke: —— and pretended they were on their side when in fact they sit behind the Minister who imposes these charges indirectly.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2006)

Ulick Burke: On another issue, if we analyse the number of prisoners, especially those in the younger age groups, and we know the difficulties they face, it is clear that dropping out of school is the origin of many of their problems. They are then out of the school equation and nothing can be done for them. It is unbelievable that not just in County Galway but throughout the country the Minister for...

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2006)

Ulick Burke: I hope that does not turn out to be the case in the budget.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Dec 2006)

Ulick Burke: We will test that commitment.

Seanad: Budget Statement 2006: Motion (6 Dec 2006)

Ulick Burke: Is the Senator referring to Mr. Eddie Hobbs?

Seanad: Budget Statement 2006: Motion (6 Dec 2006)

Ulick Burke: That is some comparison.

Seanad: Budget Statement 2006: Motion (6 Dec 2006)

Ulick Burke: A far cry from a few years ago. The Minister of State is the man who was putting up hoarding this day three years ago.
